MEDICAL PROGRAM - DEATHS & INCIDENCE OF DISEASE IN HIGH-RISK INFANT POPULATION HAVE BEEN REDUCED. OUR OVERALL PATIENT DEATH RATE OF 0.32 PER 1,000 HIGH RISK INFANTS REFERRED TO OUR PROGRAM, COMPARES FAVORABLY TO THE GENERAL SUDDEN INFANT RATE OF 0.54 PER 1,000 LIVE BIRTHS. CARIORESPIRATORY MONITORS ARE AVAILABLE ON A SLIDING SCALE BASIS FOR HIGH RISK ARE INFANTS. 0 INDIVIDUALS SERVED.
EDUCATION PROGRAM - THE SAFE SLEEP AND "REDUCE THE RISCK" CAMPAIGN IS BELIEVED TO BE THE PRIMARY REASON FOR THE DECREASE IN SIDS RATE. LOCALLY, RISK REDUCTION INFORMATION HAS BEEN DISTRIBUTED TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, DAY CARE GROUP PROVIDER GROUPS, LAY AND PROFESSIONAL POPULATIONS AND NEW PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS. THE "SAFE SLEEP KIT" DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ALL CLINICS AND HOSPITALS PROVIDING OBSTETRICAL SERVICES WITHIN BRAZORIA COUNTY. THE ACCESS (ALL CHILDREN CAN ENJOY SAFE SLEEP) PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE SAFE PACK N PLAYS TO FAMILIES IN NEED. 3,433 INDIVIDUALS SERVED.
COUNSELING HAS APPARENTLY LOWERED THE DIVORCE RATE AND STRESS AMONG SIDS FAMILIES SERVED. FAMILIES OF HIGH-RISK INFANTS TEND TO ADJUST WELL TO THE STRESSES ASSOCIATED WITH MONITORING AS DOCUMENTED BY COMPLIANCE, ACCEPTANCE OF TREATMENT PROROCOLS AND MAINTENANCE OF FAMILY INTEGRITY. STAFF HAVE WRITTEN CHAPTERS FOR BOTH THE "SIDS SURVIVAL GUIDEX AND THE "REVISED SIDS SURVIVAL GUIDE" BOOKS WITH NATIONWIDE EXPOSURE. "THE VOICE WITHIN", A BOOK FOR FAMILIES AFFECTED BY SUDDEN DEATH DURING INFANCY, WAS PUBLISHED IN 2007 AND ALSO HAS NATIONWIDE DISTRIBUTION.
