OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS THIS YEAR INCLUDE:300+ INDIVIDUAL ITEMS RECEIVED, ANALYZED AND CATALOGED FOR SEARCH22 OF ITEMS RETURNED TO FAMILY IN JAPAN1000+ EMAILS AND PHONE CALLS ANSWERED100+ NEWS STORIES, PRINT, TELEVISION, RADIO NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLYFOR THE FIRST TIME IN OUR HISTORY, A JAPANESE FAMILY CONTACTED OBON SOCIETY TO HELP LIBERATE THEIR FAMILY REMAINS FROM DISPLAY ABOARD A MILITARY AIRCRAFT MUSEUM, AND RETURN TO THEM. AFTER THIS WAS SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISHED OBON SOCIETY ESCORTED THE FLAG TO JAPAN FOR DELIVERY TO THE FAMILY IN TOKYO. THE EVENT ATTRACTED INTERNATIONAL NEWS AND MORE THAN 125 NEW FLAGS DELIVERED TO US IN THE FOLLOWING TWO MONTHS.CHAIRMAN OF NIPPON IZOKUKAI, MR TOSHIEI MIZUOCHI VISTED OBON SOCIETY IN SEPTEMBER. AFTER MEETINGS IN PORTLAND AND ASTORIA, HE RETURNED TO JAPAN.REX ZIAK, CO-FOUNDER OF OBON SOCIETY WAS SELECTED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN TO RECEIVED THE ORDER OF THE RISING SUN, GOLD AND SILVER RAYS IN RECOGNITION OF HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO PROMOTING UNDERSTANDING AND FRIENDLY RELATIONS BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES. A FAMILY IN GEORGIA CHOSE TO HAND-DELIVER A YOSEGAKI HINOMARU TO JAPAN AND PERSONALLY HAND IT TO THE BEREAVED FAMILY. OBON SOCIETY ACCOMPANIED THEM TO OVERSEE THE CEREMONY AND TRANSLATE. THE STORY WAS BROADCAST INTERNATIONALLY.
