THE MISSION OF THE ABMGG IS TO SERVE THE PUBLIC AND MEDICAL PROFESSION BY ESTABLISHING PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION STANDARDS AND PROMOTING LIFELONG LEARNING THROUGH AS WELL AS EXCELLENCE IN MEDICAL GENETICS AND GENOMICS. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, THE ABMGG:1. CREDENTIALS AND CERTIFIES PRACTITIONERS OF MEDICAL GENETICS AND GENOMICS; AND2. FOSTERS LIFE-LONG LEARNING THROUGH CONTINUING CERTIFICATION.

CERTIFICATION EXAMINATIONS ARE GIVEN EVERY OTHER YEAR IN ORDER TO CERTIFY THOSE GENETICISTS PROVIDING CLINICAL SERVICES WHO HAVE RECEIVED ADEQUATE PREPARATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE BOARD'S EDUCATIONAL, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE STANDARDS.
MAINTAINING CERTIFICATION THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE, CONTINUING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM COMPRISED OF ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO ASSIST DIPLOMATES WITH MAINTAINING CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND IMPROVING THEIR SPECIALTY PRACTICE TO BETTER MEET PATIENT CARE NEEDS. EACH SEGMENT IS ASSOCIATED WITH CERTAIN ACTIVITIES ENCOMPASSING PROFESSIONALISM, LIFELONG LEARNING, LONGITUDINAL ASSESSMENT (KNOWLEDGE-BASED), AND IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL PRACTICE.
