NEXT STEP TO SUCCESS WAS FOUNDED IN 2021 UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE JAMES BARRY ROBINSON INSTITUTE AS A HIGH-PRIORITY INITIATIVE TO ADDRESS CHRONIC POVERTY IN NORFOLK. EACH DAY AT NSTS IS UNIQUE WHERE YOUTH ARE EMPOWERED TO LEARN NEW SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES. WE SEE OUR YOUTH AS OUR PARTNERS AND EMPOWER THESE STAKEHOLDERS TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS IN THEIR LIVES AT SCHOOL, AT HOME, AND IN THE COMMUNITY.

THE HISTORIC CITY OF NORFOLK HAS BEEN HOME TO FAMOUS AUTHORS, MUSICIANS, AND THE ATLANTIC FLEET. CURRENTLY, NORFOLK HAS A POVERTY RATE TWICE THE STATE AVERAGE, AND A QUARTER OF THE CHILDREN IN NORFOLK ARE GROWING UP IN POVERTY. TO PRESERVE THE CITY'S GREATEST ASSETITS YOUNG PEOPLENEXT STEP TO SUCCESS (NSTS) IS ON A MISSION TO REMIND TEENS THAT THEIR LIMITLESS POTENTIAL AND BRIGHT FUTURES DESERVE TO BE NURTURED AND CELEBRATED. NSTS WORKS WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY PARTNERS, AND FAMILIES TO OFFER A WIDE RANGE OF ACTIVITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES, THROUGH AFTERSCHOOL AND SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS, TO NORFOLK YOUTH AGES 1318 TO INSPIRE THEM TO BECOME MORE CONFIDENT, HOPEFUL, AND DETERMINED INDIVIDUALS PREPARED FOR ANY CHALLENGE ON THEIR JOURNEY TO SUCCESS.
