FESTIVAL AND ACADEMY: THE WINTERGREEN MUSIC FESTIVAL IS HELD FOR FOUR WEEKS EACH SUMMER AT WINTERGREEN RESORT AND NEIGHBORING VENUES, ATTRACTING AUDIENCES, VISITORS, AS WELL AS TOP MUSICIANS AND ASPIRING STUDENTS TO THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS. FULL ORCHESTRA CONCERTS ARE PERFORMED EACH WEEKEND ALONG WITH CHAMBER MUSIC AND COLLABORATIVE CONCERTS WITH AREA PARTNERS TO ENHANCE THE COLLECTIVE REGION. CONCERTS, SEMINARS, COOKING CLASSES, AND MASTERCLASSES ARE PRESENTED DAILY AND AUDIENCES ENJOY MANY GENRES OF MUSIC INCLUDING CLASSICAL, JAZZ, BLUEGRASS, POP, AND MORE. DUE TO COVID-19, THE TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL WAS ADAPTED TO INCORPORATE SEATING CAPACITY RESTRICTIONS, IMPROVED CIRCULATION, AND SAFETY GUIDELINES IN ACCORDANCE WITH CDC RECOMMENDATIONS. PRESENTATION FORMATS, SOCIAL GATHERINGS, AND ARTISTIC ARRANGEMENTS WERE ALL ADAPTED TO ALLOW FOR SAFE, IN-PERSON FESTIVAL OFFERINGS TO TAKE PLACE.
WINTERGREEN MUSIC PRESENTED MANY ONLINE EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, INCLUDING A HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA CONCERT, COLLABORATIVE MASTERCLASSES WITH MUSIC SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE, AND THE RELEASE OF ARCHIVED ONLINE EVENTS FROM 2020. THE WINTERGREEN MUSIC FESTIVAL TOOK PLACE LIVE AND IN PERSON AT WINTERGREEN RESORT AND NEIGHBORING WINERIES, CIDERIES, AND VENUES ADAPTED FOR COVID WITH REDUCED ATTENDANCE CAPACITIES AND ALTERNATIVE CONCERT PRESENTATIONS. THE ACADEMY (THAT TAKES PLACE EACH YEAR SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE FESTIVAL) WAS HYBRID IN SUMMER OF 2021 WITH SOME PROGRAMS IN PERSON (I.E. ARTS ADMINSTRATION FELLOWSHIP), OTHERS ONLINE, AND SOME CONVERTED TO BOTH ONLINE AND IN PERSON (I.E. CONDUCTORS' SUMMIT). WINTERGREEN MUSIC SUCCESSFULLY PRESENTED OFFERINGS TO BRING THE ORGANIZATION FORWARD FROM EXCLUSIVE ONLINE PROGRAMS TO A COMBINATION OF LIVE AND ONLINE EVENTS.
MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAM: THE WINTERGREEN MUSIC ACADEMY TAKES PLACE IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE FESTIVAL, ATTRACTING STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO STUDY STRING CHAMBER MUSIC, WIND CHAMBER MUSIC, VOICE, CONDUCTING, COMPOSITION, COLLABORATIVE PIANO, AND ARTS ADMINISTRATION. MANY FESTIVAL ARTISTS ARE ALSO ACADEMY FACULTY AND LEAD COACHINGS, MASTERCLASSES, AND TRAIN STUDENTS FOR PERFORMANCES. THE ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM ALSO ALLOWS FOR STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS TO LEARN FROM AND OBSERVE TOP PERFORMING ARTISTS. STUDENT PERFORMANCES, INCLUDING THE SERVICE-BASED COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS SERIES, MASTERCLASSES, AND WORKSHOPS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. WM ALSO SUPPORTS NELSON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS THROUGH ARTISTIC PROGRAM INITIATIVES YEAR-ROUND. DUE TO COVID-19, SUMMER ACADEMY PROGRAMS WERE CONVERTED TO ONLINE, OR HYBRID ONLINE/IN PERSON FORMATS. THE ACADEMY EXPLORED A NEW MODEL OF FOCUS TO PRESENT MUSIC DEVELOPMENT TOPICS RELEVANT TO THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS NAVIGATING CAREERS WITHIN THE CONSTRAINTS OF A PANDEMIC ENVIRONMENT.
