READ USA'S RESEARCH-BASED, MULTI-LAYERED PROGRAMMING IS HELPING CHILDREN ACHIEVE - AND SOMETIMES SURPASS - GRADE-LEVEL READING PROFICIENCY. READ USA HAS CREATED AND REFINED ITS UNIQUE APPROACH TO DEVELOPING GRADE-LEVEL READERS, TEEN LEADERS, AND TRANSFORMATIONAL TEACHERS USING EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES AND PROGRAMMING. LAST YEAR, READ USA SERVED OVER 50,000 PRE-SCHOOL AGE AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM OVER 100 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND 5 COMMUNITY CENTERS THAT SERVE CHILDREN FROM UNDER-RESOURCED COMMUNITIES WITH OVER 100,000 BRAND NEW, AGE-APPROPRIATE BOOKS THEY SELECTED FOR FREE TO BUILD THEIR HOME LIBRARIES.
READ USA INCREASED ITS MULTICULTURAL LITERACY OFFERINGS THROUGH EXPANDED PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS, THE CUMMER MUSEUM OF ART & GARDENS, AND OTHER PARTNERS WITH ADDITIONAL BOOK OWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN AND PROVIDING ADDITIONAL FREE DIGITAL RESOURCES, INCLUDING "READ ALOUDS" BY LOCAL AND NATIONAL LEADERS, INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS, ACTIVITY GUIDES, AND OTHER RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS AND FAMILIES.
READ USA EXPANDED ITS LITERACY TUTORING INTERVENTION PROGRAM, EMPLOYING, TRAINING, AND SUPERVISING OVER 585 HIGH SCHOOL TEENS AND HIRING OVER 100 LICENSED EDUCATORS WITHIN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. THESE TEEN TUTORS RECEIVED TRAINING ON THE CURRICULUM MATERIALS AND PROFESSIONAL WORK ENVIRONMENT EXPECTATIONS AND SKILLS. THEY WERE THEN PAIRED WITH NEARLY 1,750 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IDENTIFIED BY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AS BELOW GRADE LEVEL READERS FOR DAILY, INTENSIVE ONE-TO-ONE LITERACY TUTORING SESSIONS IN DUVAL COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. PRE- AND POST-ASSESSMENT TESTS WERE ANALYZED AND VERIFIED BY A THIRD-PARTY SOURCE, THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY, WHICH PROVED THE INTERVENTION TO BE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE IN PRODUCING READING GAINS FOR BOTH THE TEEN TUTORS AS WELL AS THE YOUNGER STUDENTS THEY LED.
READ USA HELD A COMMUNITY EVENT, "PEACE IN THE PAGES," RAISING AWARENESS FOR LITERACY AND ITS MULTI-FACETED PROGRAMMING BY HONORING SEVEN COMMUNITY LEADERS WHO EXEMPLIFY THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LITERACY AND PEACE, PROSPERITY, EMPATHY, NON-VIOLENCE, JUSTICE, AND FREEDOM. PEACE IN THE PAGES ALSO PROVIDES AN ANNUAL PROGRAMMING AND IMPACT UPDATE TO THE ORGANIZATION'S DONORS, GRANTORS, AND FUNDERS.
