TO IMPROVE LITERACY LEVELS BY HELPING STUDENTS ADVANCE TO READ AT THEIR APPROPRIATE GRADE LEVEL USING SINGING AS A CRITICAL PART OF THE LEARNING PROCESS.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

DURING 2023, SING OUT AND READ (SOAR), THROUGH ITS "FAMILY LITERACY PROJECT OR "FLIP" FOR SHORT, WORKED WITH APPROXIMATELY 750 AT-RISK STUDENTS FROM ABOUT 600 FAMILIES WITH LOW HOUSEHOLD INCOME IN THE TAMPA BAY AREA. OUR STUDENTS ARE "STRUGGLING READERS", OFTEN BEING TWO OR EVEN THREE YEARS BEHIND IN THEIR LITERACY LEVELS. ON AVERAGE, THE STUDENTS THAT COMPLETE THE 12-WEEK "FLIP" SESSIONS, GAIN ONE FULL YEAR IN THEIR READING COMPREHENSION LEVEL. STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THIS DRAMATIC GAIN IN READING, AFTER YEARS OF FRUSTRATION, AS A PROFOUNDLY TRANSFORMATIONAL EVENT. MANY PARENTS REPORT SEEING THEIR CHILDREN'S CONFIDENCE "SOAR" AS THEY GO FROM DISLIKING READING TO LOVING IT AND LOVING LEARNING.
