THE STAIR PROGRAM ASSISTS FIRST AND SECOND GRADE STUDENTS ENROLLED INBIRMINGHAM CITY SCHOOLS TO IMPROVE THEIR READING SKILLS. STAIR IS ANAFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM USING AROUND 300 VOLUNTEER TUTORS/ WHO TEACHONE-ON-ONE READING LESSONS TO AT-RISK CHILDREN. CHILDREN ARE CHOSEN BYTHEIR TEACHERS IN THE CURRENT TAX YEAR. THERE WERE 12 SITES THROUGHOUTBIRMINGHAM THAT SERVED 187 STUDENTS. STUDENTS MET TUTORS TWICE PER WEEKFOR TWO HOURS DURING SEPTEMBER THROUGH APRIL. STUDENTS ARE TAUGHT AVARIETY OF SKILLS NECESSARY TO READ AT GRADE LEVEL. STUDENTS WHOCOMPLETED THE STAIR PROGRAM CONSISTENTLY SHOW AN AVERAGE RATE OFIMPROVEMENT OF 93% IN READING FLUENCY.
