AFTER CANCELING THE ANNUAL VOCAL COMPETITION IN 2020 DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, JTVA RETURNED IN 2021 WITH A COMPLETELY DIGITAL COMPETITION WHICH WAS STREAMED ONLINE ON JUNE 26-27, 2021. FROM A RECORD 545 APPLICANTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, 14 FINALISTS WERE CHOSEN IN TWO TIERS. OVER $54,000 IN PRIZE MONEY WAS AWARDED TO THESE SINGERS, AS WELL AS PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES WITH OAKLAND SYMPHONY AND A SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL IN PROVENCE, FRANCE. IN NOVEMBER 2021, JTVA AWARDED ITS INAUGURAL ELIZABETH GREENFIELD AWARD. THIS $5,000 GRANT, NAMED IN HONOR OF A TRAILBLAZING 19TH CENTURY BLACK AMERICAN SINGER, RECOGNIZES AN OUTSTANDING PRESENT-DAY BLACK SINGER BY PROVIDING MEANINGFUL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO FURTHER THEIR CAREER. 7 FINALISTS WERE CHOSEN FROM 91 APPLICANTS AND THE COMPETITION FINAL ROUND WAS STREAMED ONLINE ON NOVEMBER 7.
