STUDIO ART: RICHMOND ART CENTER SERVES THE RESIDENTS OF RICHMOND, CALIFORNIA. RICHMOND IS A DIVERSE CITY WITH A POPULATION OF 116,500 PEOPLE; 35% ARE FOREIGN-BORN AND 42% IDENTIFY AS LATINX. 36.5% OF RESIDENTS IDENTIFY AS WHITE; 20.2% BLACK; 15.3% ASIAN; AND 1% INDIGENOUS. RICHMOND ART CENTER BEGAN IN 1936 WITH ART CLASSES RUN AS AN EDUCATION PROGRAM OF THE NEW DEAL. TODAY RICHMOND ART CENTER CONTINUES ITS FOUNDING LEGACY - ARTS EDUCATION - AS OUR PROGRAMS HAVE EVOLVED IN RESPONSE TO A CHANGING CITY. OUR ART CLASSES RESPOND TO THE COMMUNITY NEED FOR ACTIVITIES THAT PROMOTE GOOD MENTAL HEALTH, SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING, AND IMPROVED CONNECTION BETWEEN COMMUNITY MEMBERS. SINCE 1936 RICHMOND ART CENTER HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO RUNNING HIGH-QUALITY ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS. OVER 5,000 ADULTS, YOUTH, KIDS, AND FAMILIES ENGAGE IN OUR CLASSES PER YEAR. CLASSES ARE RUN OUT OF SEVEN STUDIO SPACES FOCUSED ON MEDIA INCLUDING CERAMICS, PAINTING, FIBER ART, METAL ART, PRINTMAKING, AND GLASS. WE ALSO OFFER CLASSES TAUGHT IN SPANISH AND HAVE A DEDICATED STUDIO FOR YOUTH. STUDIO CLASSES ARE FEE-BASED, ALTHOUGH FEES ARE SUBSIDIZED, AND WE OFFER NEEDS-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS. TO MAINTAIN A HIGH STANDARD OF EDUCATION AND RELEVANT CLASS OFFERINGS, WE INVEST IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHING ARTISTS AND ENCOURAGE EXPERIMENTAL CLASS DEVELOPMENT. SAMPLE NON-TRADITIONAL RECENT CLASSES INCLUDE WOMEN IN CERAMICS; STREET ART 101; FOOD SAFE MOLD MAKING; AND APRENDE A DIBUJAR.
ART IN THE COMMUNITY (AIC): IN ADDITION TO STUDIO CLASSES, WE OFFER ART IN THE COMMUNITY. THESE ARE EDUCATION PROGRAMS WHICH INCLUDE: ART INSTRUCTION IN LOCAL SCHOOLS, YOUTH TOUR PROGRAMS, SUMMER ART CAMP FOR KIDS, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES FOR EDUCATORS. ALL THESE PROGRAMS ARE FREE. WE CONTINUE TO PARTNER WITH LOCAL PLAYERS (RYSE, RPAL, COMMUNITY CENTERS, SENIOR CENTERS, LIBRARY, NIAD, ET AL) TO OFFER FREE PROGRAMMING AT THEIR SITES. WE CONTINUE TO WORK JOINT EXHIBITIONS WITH NIAD (NURTURING INDEPENDENCE THROUGH ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT) AND PROVIDE ARTS PROGRAMMING TO MANDARIN SCHOOL (IN MANDARIN) AND PERES SCHOOL.
EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS FY2022-2023 PRESENTED 16 EXHIBITIONS OF ARTWORK BY 543 ARTISTS THIS INCLUDED 8 SOLO EXHIBITIONS (62% OF SOLO EXHIBITIONS FEATURED BIPOC ARTISTS) WE PAID EXHIBITING ARTISTS OVER $40,000 IN ARTIST FEES EXHIBITION PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED: EMMY LOU PACKARD: ARTIST OF CONSCIOUS EXHIBITION EXPLORING THE LEGACY OF ARTIST AND ACTIVIST, EMMY LOU PACKARD (19141998), A REMARKABLE, THOUGH OVER-LOOKED, ARTIST KNOWN FOR HER PAINTINGS, PRINTS AND MURALS, AS WELL AS HER SOCIAL AND POLITICAL ACTIVISM THE LARGEST SURVEY OF PACKARDS WORK EVER PUT TOGETHER EXHIBITION WAS A CRITICAL AND POPULAR SUCCESS: OVER 3,500 VISITORS ATTENDED THE EXHIBITION AND RELATED PUBLIC PROGRAMS PRESS COVERAGE INCLUDED ONLINE AND PRINT ARTICLES AND RADIO INTERVIEWS: SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, SQUARE CYLINDER, EL TECOLOTE, 48 HILLS, KPFA LA RAZA CHRONICLES, AND MORE.
