FOR MORE THAN 70 YEARS, THE MID-COLUMBIA SYMPHONY HAS BEEN A VITAL CULTURAL RESOURCE FOR THE MID-COLUMBIA REGION. TODAY'S SYMPHONY IS A FULLY PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION, WITH MORE THAN 60 OF THE REGION'S FINEST PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS UNDER ANNUAL CONTRACT AND 30 ARTISTS FROM OUTSIDE THE REGION CONTRACTED FOR INDIVIDUAL CONCERTS. OUR PROGRAMMING IS DESIGNED TO ENTERTAIN AND ENRICH THE WONDERFULLY DIVERSE POPULATION OF THE MID-COLUMBIA REGION.THE SYMPHONY PRODUCES FOUR TO SEVEN CONCERTS ANNUALLY, FREQUENTLY CONTRACTING WITH FEATURED GUEST ARTISTS AND COLLABORATING WITH OTHER REGIONAL PERFORMING ARTS ORGANIZATIONS.
THE YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION IS HELD ANNUALLY TO PROMOTE AND ENCOURAGE TALENTED STUDENT MUSICIANS ACROSS THE REGION. YOUNG MUSICIANS MAY COMPETE IN ONE OF NINE DIVISIONS. A JURY OF REGIONAL PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS EVALUATES THE COMPETITORS. UP TO TWO MUSICIANS ARE SELECTED TO PERFORM WITH THE MID-COLUMBIA SYMPHONY. ELIGIBLE ARE INSTRUMENTAL STUDENTS FROM AGE 6 THROUGH GRADE 12 WHO RESIDE IN THE MID-COLUMBIA AREA OF WASHINGTON AND OREGON. 20 YOUTH ENTERED THIS YEAR'S COMPETITION.
MCYS IS A YOUTH SYMPHONY THAT WAS STARTED IN THE 2014-15 SEASON TO PROVIDE LOCAL YOUNG MUSICIANS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN A LARGE ENSEMBLE THAT IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE SCHOOLS. STUDENTS MUST RESIDE IN BENTON AND FRANKLIN COUNTIES AND BE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 12 AND 18 OR 19 YEARS (IF GRADUATING SENIOR).
