(PONGO) TEACHES AND MENTORS PERSONAL POETRY BY TEENS WHO HAVE SUFFERED TRAUMAS SUCH AS ABUSE, NEGLECT, AND EXPOSURE TO VIOLENCE. TO ACCOMPLISH ITS GOALS, PONGO RUNS WRITING PROGRAMS INSIDE DETENTION CENTERS, HOMELESS SHELTERS, PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS (SEE SCHED O)

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

PONGO PROVIDES THERAPEUTIC POETRY WRITING PROGRAMS IN DETENTION CENTERS, MENTAL HEALTH FACILITIES, HOMELESS SHELTERS, AND OTHER SITES FOR YOUTH WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED TRAUMA, INCLUDING ABUSE, NEGLECT, AND EXPOSURE TO VIOLENCE AND OPPRESSION. ACCORDING TO OUR EVALUATION, THE OUTCOMES OF THESE PROGRAMS INDICATE THAT YOUTH WRITERS ARE ABLE TO ADDRESS CORE ISSUES THROUGH PONGO, FEEL BETTER AFTER WRITING, AND CONTINUE PURSUING THE CRAFT AND FINDING NEW PURPOSE IN THEIR LIVES. BASED ON THE SUCCESS OF OUR POETRY WRITING PROGRAMS, PONGO ESTABLISHED A PROGRAM TO TRAIN INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS ON THE PONGO METHOD, OUR EVIDENCE-BASED, TRAUMA-INFORMED TECHNIQUE FOR POETRY MENTORSHIP. IN 2014, WE CODIFIED OUR METHODOLOGY IN WRITING WITH AT-RISK YOUTH: THE PONGO TEEN WRITING METHOD, USING IT AS THE TEACHING TEXT TO CONDUCT 90 TRAININGS ON OUR APPROACH. OUR TRAINING PROGRAM HAS SPURRED THE CREATION OF 96 PROJECTS BASED ON OUR MODEL. SCHED O FOR MORE INFO
