CREATING HEALTHY EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITIES FOR CHILDREN, EDUCATORS, AND FAMILIES BY ELIMINATING RACE AS A PREDICTABLE FACTOR IN EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED BY ADVOCATING FOR LASTING CHANGES TO DISRUPT STRUCTURAL RACISM, REIMAGINING EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS TO THAT ALL CHILDREN CAN EXIST IN SPACES THAT AFFIRM THEIR IDENTITY AND DIGNITY.

THREE, WEEK LONG SUMMER CAMPS WERE HELD FOR 125 STUDENTS IN RISING 1ST TO 5TH GRADES. USING LITERACY-BASED STRATEGIES AND HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES, STUDENTS ENGAGED IN A NUMBER OF LEARNING EXPERIENCES RELATED TO PROMOTING ANTI-RACISM. THE GOALS OF THE CAMPS WERE TO:* FOSTER ANTI-RACIST IDENTITIES IN CHILDREN* BUILD A HISTORICAL UNDERSTANDING OF RACE AND RACISM* EQUIP FAMILIES WITH TOOLS AND RESOURCES WHICH EXTEND ANTI-RACIST PRACTICES IN THE HOME AND COMMUNITY


CURRICULUM WORKSHOP:THE EDUCATOR SUMMER INSTITUTE WAS HELD VIRTUALLY NOVEMBER 2 - NOVEMBER 3, 2022, AND BENEFITED 15 PEOPLE. THE CURRICULUM WORKSHOP AIMS WERE TO:1) GAIN ACCESS TO WE ARE'S ANTI-RACISM SUMMER CAMP CURRICULUM; 2) UNDERSTAND HOW TO PLAN AND FACILITATE K-5 LESSONS WITH AN ANTI-RACIST LENS;3) DEVELOP CUSTOMIZED LESSON PLANS IN COLLABORATION WITH A COMMUNITY OF EDUCATORS COMMITTED TO ANTI-RACIST TEACHING PRACTICES.THIS WORKSHOP IS DESIGNED FOR EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO WANT TO IMPLEMENT SIMILARLY DESIGNED CURRICULUM IN THEIR OWN CONTEXTS. PARTICIPATING K-12 TEACHERS WILL EARN CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUS). IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT TEAMS OF AT LEAST TWO FROM EACH SCHOOL/ORGANIZATION ATTEND, BUT THIS IS NOT A REQUIREMENT. THE INSTITUTE COST WAS $300. FOR TEAMS OF TWO OR MORE, THE COST WAS $275 PER PERSON.


THE LET'S TALK RACISM CONFERENCE:THIS 2-DAY VIRTUAL CONFERENCE WAS ATTENDED BY 300 PEOPLE AND WAS CO-SPONSORED BY WE ARE, NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY'S SCHOOL OF EDUCATION AND BEN AND JERRY'S ICE CREAM. THE GOAL WAS TO GIVE K-12 EDUCATORS AND PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE IN SESSIONS CENTERED ON THE IMPACT OF SYSTEMIC RACISM AND WAYS OF DISMANTLING IT IN OUR SCHOOLS. THE CONFERENCE WAS DESIGNED FOR EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO WANTED TO IMPLEMENT SIMILARLY DESIGNED CURRICULUM IN THEIR OWN CONTEXTS. PARTICIPATING K-12 TEACHERS EARNED CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS (CEUS).TICKETS WERE $60 FOR GENERAL ADMISSION AND $30 FOR STUDENT DISCOUNT.
