Part 3 - Line 4a
HOW IS GRIEF FROM SUICIDE OR SUBSTANCE LOSS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FORMS OF LOSS?SUICIDE GRIEF HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS ONE OF THE MOST PAINFUL EXPERIENCES AN INDIVIDUAL EVER FACES. SHOCK, ANGUISH, LOSS, ANGER, GUILT, REGRET, ANXIETY, FEAR, INTRUSIVE IMAGES, DEPERSONALIZATION, FEELING OVERWHELMED, LONELINESS, UNHAPPINESS, AND DEPRESSION ARE JUST SOME OF THE FEELING STATES OFTEN DESCRIBED. IT IS NOT SOMETHING TO BE TREATED, BUT RATHER SOMETHING TO BE INTEGRATED IN LIFE IN A HEALTHY WAY. HOWEVER, IF GRIEF IS NOT PROCESSED IT CAN RESULT IN LONG-TERM PERSISTENT COMPLICATED GRIEF.SUICIDE AND SUBSTANCE LOSS ARE BOTH HIGHLY STIGMATIZED. THE GRIEF COMES WITH MANY LAYERS AND COMPLEXITIES. LOSS TO SUICIDE OR SUBSTANCE USE IS AN EPIDEMIC THAT UNFORTUNATELY COUNTINES TO EFFECT MANY FAMILIES. THE STATISTICS BELOW ILLUSTRATE THE HEARTBREAKING REALITY OF HOW MANY PEOPLE LOSE THEIR LIVES TO SUICIDE, ALCOHOL, OR SUBSTANCE USE.THE RATE OF U.S. DEATHS DUE TO ALCOHOL, DRUGS, AND SUICIDE CLIMBED 11 PERCENT IN 2021. WHILE AN ALL-TIME RECORD, 209,225 AMERICANS LOST THEIR LIVES DUE TO ALCOHOL, DRUGS OR SUICIDE DURING THE YEAR, THESE DEATHS CONTINUED A TWO-DECADE TREND OF SHARPLY INCREASING FATALITIES DUE TO SUBSTANCE MISUSE AND SUICIDE IN THE U.S.SUICIDE IS A LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE U.S. SUICIDE DEATHS FOR ADULTS (35-64) ARE HIGHEST OF ANY SEGMENT OF THE POPULATION, ACCOUNTING FOR NEARLY HALF THE TOTAL SUICIDES IN THE US. THE SUICIDE RATES FOR YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS (AGES 10-24) ARE ALSO ALARMING SUICIDE IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN THIS SEGMENT, AND SUICIDE RATES FOR THESE YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE INCREASED BY OVER 50% SINCE 2000.SINCE 2018, ERICSHOUSE HAS PROVIDED 5,365 ONE-ON-ONE AND GROUP SESSIONS.
