THE FPN'S MISSION IS TO ELEVATE THE WORK OF THE FREEDOM PROJECTS AND TO PROVIDE THEM WITH RESOURCES THAT PROMOTE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND HIGH-QUALITY PROGRAMMING. AS A BACKBONE ORGANIZATION, OUR PRIMARY FOCUS IS THE SUSTAINABILITY AND GROWTH OF EXISTING AND FUTURE FREEDOM PROJECTS.

FREEDOM PROJECT PROGRAMMING: IN 2022, FPN DELIVERED ON ITS MISSION BY PROVIDING FREEDOM PROJECTS (FPS) WITH RESOURCES THAT PROMOTED OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND HIGH-QUALITY PROGRAMMING. THIS YEAR, DIRECT PROGRAM ASSISTANCE TO THE FPS TOTALED $139,000, ALL OF WHICH WENT TOWARDS PROGRAM EXPENSES AT THE FPS. $125,000 WAS SECURED BY THE FPN FROM THE PHIL HARDIN FOUNDATION TO DIRECTLY SUPPORT FP PROGRAM: OF THAT AMOUNT (FOLLOWING THE AGREEMENT WITH THE FOUNDATION) $80,000 SUPPORTED PROGRAMMING AT THE MERIDIAN FP, $25,000 SUPPORTED PROGRAMMING AT THE SUNFLOWER COUNTY FP, AND $20,000 SUPPORTED PROGRAMMING AT THE ROSEDALE FP. TWO ADDITIONAL GRANTS OF $6,000 EACH WERE DISTRIBUTED TO SUPPORT PROGRAMMING AT THE MERIDIAN FP. A FINAL $2,000 SUPPORTED PROGRAMMING EXPENSES AT THE ROSEDALE FP, SECURED FROM THROUGH A GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC FOUNDATION.


FPN ALSO OVERSEES CENTRALIZED PROGRAMMATIC PLANNING FOR THE FREEDOM PROJECTS, PROVIDES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR FREEDOM PROJECT STAFF IN THE FORM OF FPN SUMMITS AND EXTERNAL OPPORTUNITIES, AND CONDUCTS SITE VISITS FOR BOTH PROGRAMMATIC ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT AT EACH FREEDOM PROJECT.


ALUMNI COLLEGE SUCCESS PROGRAM: THE ALUMNI COLLEGE SUCCESS PROGRAM SUPPORTS ALL FREEDOM PROJECT ALUMNI WHO MATRICULATE INTO COLLEGE BY PROVIDING MENTORSHIP CALLS, ACADEMIC COACHING, MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT, AND MONTHLY STIPENDS. WE HAVE A PART-TIME PROGRAM DIRECTOR WHO OVERSEES THE ADMINISTRATION OF THIS PROGRAM AND PART-TIME COORDINATORS AT EACH OF OUR THREE FREEDOM PROJECT SITES (SUNFLOWER COUNTY, MERIDIAN, AND ROSEDALE, MS) WHO LEAD THE STUDENT-FACING PROGRAMMING. THIS YEAR WE SUPPORTED 24 ALUMNI FELLOWS WHO ENROLLED AT 15 COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.


FREEDOM SUMMER COLLEGIATE: FREEDOM SUMMER COLLEGIATE RECRUITS, TRAINS, AND FUNDS DOCTORAL CANDIDATES TO DESIGN AND FACILITATE TRANSFORMATIVE SUMMER SEMINARS AT EACH FREEDOM PROJECT SITE. IN THIS PROGRAM, HIGH-SCHOOL FREEDOM FELLOWS EXPERIENCE A POWERFUL COLLEGE SIMULATION FROM THE COMFORT OF THE FREEDOM PROJECT AND EARN COLLEGE CREDIT FROM MILLSAPS COLLEGE. IN 2022, SIX FREEDOM SUMMER COLLEGIATE INSTRUCTORS LED COLLEGE-BRIDGE COURSES AT THE MERIDIAN FP, THE SUNFLOWER COUNTY FP, AND THE ROSEDALE FP. EACH FP HAD ADDITIONAL SITE COORDINATORS TO SUPPORT COURSE LOGISTICS. THIS YEAR, FSC STUDENTS EXPLORED FOOD HISTORY, THE SOCIOLOGY OF POVERTY, A HISTORY OF BLACK POLITICAL THOUGHT, THE SCIENCE OF GRAVITY, WAYS OF PRODUCING SCIENCE, AND HOW TO BUILD A COMPUTER.
