ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES ("ACES") DIRECTLY IMPACT TWO OUT OF THREE ADULTS IN THE UNITED STATES, AND ABOUT 1 IN 6 ADULTS EXPERIENCE FOUR OR MORE ACES. ACES AND TOXIC STRESS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH OVER 40 COMMON, COSTLY HEALTH CONDITIONS (LIKE HEART DISEASE, CANCER, STROKE, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY) AND ARE ASSOCIATED WITH AT LEAST 8 OF THE 10 LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH IN THE US. ALONG WITH COSTLY HEALTH CONDITIONS AND PREVENTABLE SUFFERING, ACES CAN HAVE NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON EDUCATIONAL, LEARNING, WORKPLACE, RELATIONSHIP, AND FAMILY OUTCOMES, AS WELL FINANCIAL COSTS INTO THE BILLIONS ANNUALLY. LEADING HEALTH EXPERTS BELIEVE ACES AND TOXIC STRESS TO BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST UNADDRESSED PUBLIC HEALTH CHALLENGES IN THE NATION. IN 2021, THE ACE RESOURCE NETWORK LAUNCHED THE FIRST NATIONAL PUBLIC AWARENESS AND EDUCATION CAMPAIGN, THE STORY OF YOUR NUMBER (AVAILABLE AT NUMBERSTORY.ORG) ON ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES (ACES), HOPE, AND HEALING. THE GOALS FOR THE CAMPAIGN AND OUR RESULTS AT SIX MONTHS INTO THE CAMPAIGN WERE:1. KARESTAN KOENEN, WHO MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF CHILDHOOD MALTREATMENT ON A FULL RANGE OF SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND HEALTH INDICATORS THROUGH A FIRST EVER OUTCOME-WIDE ANALYSIS OF CHILDHOOD ADVERSITY ON PHENOME-WIDE LATENT FACTORS. DR. KOENEN, WITH COLLEAGUES FROM THE BROAD AND HARVARD, AND NEW PARTNERS, IDENTIFIED 27 FACTORS FROM THE EXPLORATORY AND CONFIRMATORY FACTOR ANALYSES ON 700 PHENOTYPES (I.E., EYE HEALTH, DIET, BODILY PAIN, CANCER). THIS RESEARCH WILL INFORM FUTURE STUDIES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE HOLISTIC PICTURE OF THE COMPLEX AND FAR REACHING IMPACTS OF CHILDHOOD ADVERSITY AND IDENTIFY THE SPECIFIC PATHWAYS IN WHICH CHILDHOOD ADVERSITY IMPACTS HEALTH SO WE CAN PREVENT AND INTERVENE MORE EFFECTIVELY.

NEAR-DROWNING HAPPENS VERY QUICKLY. WITHIN THREE MINUTES OF SUBMERSION, MOST PEOPLE ARE UNCONSCIOUS, AND WITHIN FIVE MINUTES THE BRAIN BEGINS TO SUFFER FROM LACK OF OXYGEN. AN ESTIMATED 5,000 CHILDREN AGES 14 AND YOUNGER ARE HOSPITALIZED EACH YEAR FOR NEAR-DROWNING ACCIDENTS: 15% DIE IN THE HOSPITAL AND UP TO 20% ARE LEFT WITH SEVERE, PERMANENT NEUROLOGICAL DISABILITIES. PATIENTS WHO ARRIVE AT AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AWAKE AND ALERT USUALLY SURVIVE WITH BRAIN FUNCTION INTACT, ALTHOUGH THEY MAY INITIALLY HAVE RESPIRATORY COMPLICATIONS. PNEUMONIA IS COMMON FOLLOWING NEAR DROWNING AND OFTEN DEVELOPS WITHIN THE FIRST 24 HOURS. DEATH OR PERMANENT NEUROLOGICAL DAMAGE IS VERY LIKELY WHEN PATIENTS ARRIVE AT THE EMERGENCY ROOM COMATOSE OR WITHOUT A HEARTBEAT. OF THESE PATIENTS, 35 TO 60 PERCENT DIE IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, WHILE ALMOST ALL OF THOSE WHO SURVIVE HAVE PERMANENT DISABILITIES. MEDICAL COSTS FOR SUBMERSION VICTIMS DURING THE INITIAL HOSPITALIZATION ALONE CAN BE QUITE HIGH. COSTS CAN RANGE FROM AN ESTIMATED $2,000 FOR A VICTIM WHO RECOVERS FULLY TO $80,000 FOR A VICTIM WITH SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE. SOME SEVERELY BRAIN DAMAGED VICTIMS HAVE INITIAL HOSPITAL STAYS IN EXCESS OF 120 DAYS AND EXPENSES IN EXCESS OF $150,000. THE INITIATIVE TO END CHILD DROWNING WAS STARTED IN 2021 WITH THE GOAL TO ELIMINATE ACCIDENTAL DROWNING INJURIES AND DEATH IN CHILDREN THE SINGLE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG CHILDREN AGES ONE TO FOUR.WE ACHIEVE OUR GOAL BY FOCUSING ON FOUR PILLARS:1. INFORM/ BUILD AWARENESS: ENSURE ALL PARENTS, PEDIATRICIANS AND POOL OWNERS ARE AWARE OF THE DANGERS OF DROWNING AND DIRECT THEM TO RESOURCES.2. ADVOCACY: AFFECT CHANGE AS IT RELATES TO RECOMMENDATIONS AND POLICIES SURROUNDING WATER SAFETY FOR KIDS.3. CONSUMER PROTECTION: ENSURE ALL MESSAGING ON SWIM AND WATER RELATED PRODUCTS ARE ACCURATELY LABELED.4. RESEARCH: CONDUCT RESEARCH ON THE IMPACTS OF WATER SAFETY TRAINING AND DROWNING PREVENTION METHODS FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES.1. WE HAVE PARTNERED WITH THE NATIONAL DROWNING PREVENTION ALLIANCE AND THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS, THE TWO ABSOLUTE LEADING AUTHORITIES IN THE SPACE, AND ARE WORKING WITH THEM ON PROGRAMS TO EDUCATE AND INFORM.2. WE ARE WORKING WITH THE SAME EXPERTS WHO IMPLEMENTED CAR-SEAT AND SIDS SAFETY PROGRAMS - BOTH CHANGED STATISTICS, CHANGED CULTURE, AND SAVED UNTOLD NUMBERS OF LIVES. 3. WE HAVE BEGUN "THE MOST IMPORTANT CONVERSATION" WITH TENS OF THOUSANDS OF POOL AND SPA INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS.4. WE HAVE BUILT A TEAM OF WATER SAFETY CHAMPIONS COMPRISED OF OLYMPIANS, PHYSICIANS, PROFESSIONALS, BRANDS, CELEBRITIES AND INFLUENCERS TO SPREAD AWARENESS OF THE FIVE LAYERS OF PROTECTION NEEDED TO KEEP KIDS SAFE. 5. WE HAVE LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN TO END THE MISINFORMATION - THE DANGEROUS PRACTICE OF LABELLING AND MARKETING FLOTATION DEVICES AS "LEARN TO SWIM" DEVICES.WE ARE FIELDING UNPRECEDENTED RESEARCH THAT COULD PROVE FREE SWIM LESSONS RESULT IN A DECREASE OF CHILDHOOD DROWNINGS - WHICH COULD UNLOCK TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN FEDERAL AND PHILANTHROPIC SUPPORT.

CONDUCTED RESEARCH ON VARIOUS SOCIAL ISSUES WHICH AFFECT DISADVANTAGED PEOPLE SUCH AS HOMELESSNESS AND THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. PROVIDED GRANTS TO VARIOUS GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TO ERADICATE SUCH SOCIAL ISSUES.
