EDUCATION: UNITED WAY WORKS TO HELP CHILDREN AND YOUTH ACHIEVE THEIR POTENTIAL THROUGH ENSURING A) CHILDREN ENTER SCHOOL WITH LITERACY, EMOTIONAL AND INTELLECTUAL SKILLS; B) ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ARE ACADEMIC ACHIEVERS IN MATH AND READING; AND C) YOUNG PEOPLE GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL READY FOR COLLEGE OR WORK. BASED ON TEXAS SCHOOL READINESS SCORES, UNITED WAY IS CLOSING THE GAP FOR CHIDREN ENTERING SCHOOL AND REDUCING THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN REPEATING THE EARLY GRADES. THROUGH STRATEGIC DIALOGUES AND DATA REVIEW UNITED WAY IS GAINING AND UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS NECESSARY FOR YOUTH TO COMPLETE HIGH SCHOOL AND GAIN POST SECONDARY CREDENTIALS THAT LEAD TO GOOD PAYING JOBS.
INCOME: THE UNITED WAY'S INCOME INITIATIVE PRIMARILY FOCUSES ON PROMOTING FINANCIAL STABILITY ALONG WITH FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE. THE UNITED WAY HEADS AN ANNUAL PROGRAM CALLED THE "VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE" (VITA), FOR LOW INCOME FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY TO REDUCE THE COST OF INCOME TAX PREPARATION AS WELL AS PROMOTE THE AWARENESS OF TAX CREDITS THESE FAMILIES MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR.
HEALTH: THE UNITED WAY WORKS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THOSE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING ACCESSIBILITY TO QUALITY HEALTH CARE, ALONG WITH THE PROMOTION OF PREVENTATIVE MEASURES SUCH AS IMPROVED HEALTH AND FITNESS. THE UNITED WAY PARTNERS WITH VARIOUS COMMUNITY PARTNERS BY PROVIDING GRANT FUNDS AND VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE.
