ANNUAL ASSEMBLY THE PROGRAM, DEVELOPED BY THE SCAFP CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE FOR FAMILY PHYSICIANS AND OTHER HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, OFFERS A VARIETY OF CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPICS PERTINENT TO PATIENT CARE. EACH PRESENTATION HAS SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES SO THAT AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PROGRAM THE LEARNER WILL HAVE A WORKING AND APPLICABLE UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPIC. TOPICS INCLUDED WELLBEING; TOP PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUES IN SC; TEN HEALTHCARE LAWS ALL PHYSICIANS SHOULD KNOW; EXPEDITED PARTNER TREATMENT ON RECURRENT CHLAMYDIA INFECTIONS; QUALITY CHANGES UPDATE; PRIMARY CARE PERSPECTIVE ON OBESITY; EVALUATION AND MANAGEMENT CODING UPDATE; A TWO-HOUR PRESENTATION ADDRESSING PRESCRIBING & MONITORING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES, ENTITLED PAIN MANAGEMENT AND OPIOIDS: BALANCING RISKS AND BENEFITS. GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS ADVISORS/EXPENSES EACH YEAR. EACH YEAR THE ACADEMY ADDRESSES LEGISLATION THAT IS INTRODUCED OR PENDING IN THE SC GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT AFFECT PATIENTS, PATIENT CARE AND THE PRACTICE OF FAMILY MEDICINE. THE ACADEMY TAKES A PROACTIVE APPROACH BY CONTRACTING WITH MAYNARD NEXSEN (FORMERLY NEXSEN PRUET, LLC) TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE IN THE LEGISLATIVE AND GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS ARENA. THE GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS ADVISORS PROVIDE INFORMATION ON LEGISLATION; INTERACT WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS; AND REPRESENT THE FAMILY MEDICINE POINT OF VIEW TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND STATE AGENCIES.
STUDENTS, RESIDENTS AND OUTREACH THE SOUTH CAROLINA ACADEMY CO-HOSTS AN ANNUAL FAMILY MEDICINE INTEREST DAY TO ENCOURAGE MEDICAL STUDENTS TO CHOOSE FAMILY MEDICINE AS A SPECIALTY AND A SC FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM UPON GRADUATION FROM MEDICAL SCHOOL. THE GOAL IS TO ENSURE THERE WILL BE A SUPPLY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS TO TAKE CARE OF THE GROWING HEALTH CARE NEEDS OF OUR STATE. SIXTEEN RESIDENT MEMBERS GAVE SCHOLARLY PRESENTATIONS DURING THE ANNUAL ASSEMBLY. THIRTEEN RESIDENT RECEIVED THE OUTSTANDING RESIDENT AWARD AT THEIR RESIDENCY PROGRAM GRADUATION.
