THE MISSION OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS IS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH CARE OF ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS THROUGH SUPPORTING AND REPESENTING THE SPECIALTY OF FAMILY MEDICINE.

ANNUAL ASSEMBLY THE ASSEMBLY PROGRAM IS DEVELOPED BY THE SCAFP CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE FOR FAMILY PHYSICIANS AND OTHER HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, OFFERING A VARIETY OF CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION TOPICS PERTINENT TO PATIENT CARE IN A DAILY PRACTICE. EACH PRESENTATION HAS SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES SO THAT AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PROGRAM THE LEARNER WILL HAVE A WORKING AND APPLICABLE UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPIC. TOPICS INCLUDED ADHD MANAGEMENT OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: VALUE-BASED CARE FOR MEANINGFUL CHANGE IN THE PCP OFFICE; UPDATE ON THE PHARMACOLOGIC MANAGEMENT OF HEART FAILURE: ENDING THE HEPC EPIDEMIC; DIABETES UPDATE; SCREENING AND CORRECTLY DIAGNOSING OCD; AND A TWO-HOUR PRESENTATION ON PRESCRIBING & MONITORING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES. TWO WORKSHOPS, CODING AND AESTHETICS. ONE KNOWLEDGE SELF-ASSESSMENT (KSAS) WORKING GROUP ON HEALTH COUNSELING AND PREVENTIVE CARE WAS OFFERED FOR MEMBERS WORKING ON THEIR BOARD RE-CERTIFICATION.
LEGISLATIVE COORDINATOR/EXPENSES EACH YEAR. EACH YEAR LEGISLATION IS INTRODUCED, PENDING OR AMENDED IN THE SC GENERAL ASSEMBLY THAT AFFECT PATIENTS, PATIENT CARE AND THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE. THE ACADEMY TAKES A PROACTIVE APPROACH BY CONTRACTING WITH NEXSEN PRUET, LLC TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE IN THE LEGISLATIVE AND GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS ARENA. THE LEGISLATIVE COORDINATORS PROVIDE INFORMATION ON LEGISLATION; INTERACT WITH ELECTED OFFICIALS; AND REPRESENT THE FAMILY MEDICINE POINT OF VIEW TO THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND STATE AGENCIES.
STUDENTS, RESIDENTS AND OUTREACH THE SOUTH CAROLINA ACADEMY CO-HOSTS AN ANNUAL FAMILY MEDICINE INTEREST DAY TO ENCOURAGE MEDICAL STUDENTS TO CHOOSE A FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM UPON GRADUATION FROM MEDICAL SCHOOL. THE GOAL IS TO ENSURE THERE WILL BE AN INCREASED SUPPLY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS TO TAKE CARE OF THE GROWING HEALTH CARE NEEDS OF OUR STATE. SIXTEEN RESIDENT MEMBERS GAVE SCHOLARLY PRESENTATIONS DURING THE ANNUAL ASSEMBLY. OUTSTANDING RESIDENT AWARDS WERE PRESENTED AT TEN OF THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM GRADUATIONS.
