THE MISSION OF FRIENDS OF IIASA (HENCEFORTH FOI) IS TO SOLICIT AND DISTRIBUTE FUNDS THAT WILL BE USED TO FOSTER AND SUPPORT RESEARCH ON THE LARGE PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES FACING MANKIND. IN GENERAL, THE RESEARCH SUPPORTED WILL BE CONDUCTED AT OR IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR APPLIED SYSTEMS ANALYSIS (IIASA), A 501(C)3 ORGANIZATION LOCATED IN LAXENBURG, AUSTRIA. FOI ALSO AIMS TO INCREASE ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN IIASA AND THE US COMMUNITY OF RESEARCHERS AND POLICY MAKERS, AND STRENGTHEN THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE IIASA NETWORK IN THE US.

FRIENDS OF IIASA AWARDED THE FIRST PETER DE JANOSI VISITING FELLOWSHIP AND YSSP TRAVEL GRANTS TO ADIL NAJAM AND VIKAS KHANNA, RESPECTIVELY. NAJAM VISITED IIASA IN JUNE-JULY 2023 AND GAVE A SEMINAR ON INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL NEGOTIATION AND CONSULTED WITH IIASA STAFF. KHANNA VISITED HIS UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH GRAD STUDENT ANAIS OSTROSKI, WHO WORKED WITH THE ADVANCED SYSTEMS ANALYSIS PROGRAM.


THANKS TO A GRANT IN 2018 FROM ROGER LEVIEN, FOI WAS ABLE TO OFFER THE LEVIEN-RAND YSSP FELLOWSHIP TO RAND DOCTORAL STUDENT JALAL AWAN TO COVER LIVING COSTS FOR HIS PARTICIPATION IN THE 2022 YOUNG SCIENTISTS SUMMER PROGRAM AT IIASA.
