PUBLIC HEALTH REPORTING NEW MEXICO IN DEPTH TACKLED BIG PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUES IN 2021: THE LACK OF WATER AFTER A CENTURY OF FEDERAL INDIFFERENCE IN NEW MEXICO'S TRIBAL COMMUNITIES; THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COSTS OF MINING COPPER FOR GROWING RENEWABLE ENERGY DEMANDS, OF NATURAL GAS POWER PLANTS IN SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO, AND ONGOING STRUGGLES OVER CLEANING UP LEGACY URANIUM MINES; THE ABYSMAL RECORD OF MORTALITY FOR CERTAIN PREMATURE INFANTS AT ONE OF ALBUQUERQUE'S LARGEST HOSPITALS; AND THE STRUGGLE FOR HOUSING IN THE STREETS OF ALBUQUERQUE.
GOOD GOVERNMENT REPORTING NEW MEXICO IN DEPTH INVESTIGATED WHO PAID FOR A CONSTITUTIONAL REFERENDUM IN NOVEMBER 2020 THAT REFORMED THE STATE'S REGULATORY AGENCY RESPONSIBLE FOR OVERSEEING UTILITIES AND OTHER LARGE CORPORATIONS. WE REPORTED ON EFFORTS TO MAKE THE LEGISLATURE MORE TRANSPARENT, PARTICULARLY THE SUCCESSFUL PASSAGE OF A LAW THAT REQUIRES LAWMAKERS TO REPORT HOW THEY SPEND CAPITAL OUTLAY MONEY. WE REPORTED ON REDISTRICTING, INCLUDING A POLITICAL BATTLE OVER HOW TO COUNT NEW MEXICO'S INCARCERATED POPULATION. AND WE FOCUSED ON ALBUQUERQUE'S MUNICIPAL ELECTION AND THE SOURCES OF MUCH OF THE MONEY FLOWING INTO THE ELECTION.
INTERNSHIP/FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN ITS SIXTH YEAR, NEW MEXICO IN DEPTH'S FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM ALLOWED US TO PROVIDE A PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISM EXPERIENCE TO TWO STUDENTS OF COLOR FROM OUR FLAGSHIP UNIVERSITIES. WE ALSO OFFERED AN INTERNSHIP TO A NEW GRADUATE OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY'S MASTERS JOURNALISM PROGRAM, PLUS A JOURNALISM STUDENT AT NYU. AND WE HOSTED AN INTERN THROUGH THE EMMA BOWEN FOUNDATION'S PROGRAM FOCUSED ON EMERGING JOURNALISTS OF COLOR. THESE FELLOWSHIPS ALLOW JOURNALISTS TO HONE THEIR CRAFT AS WELL AS OPPORTUNITIES TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND A BODY OF PUBLISHED WORK.
