Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

PUBLIC HEALTH REPORTING PUBLIC HEALTH CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR PROJECT AREA. IN 2022, WE PRODUCED A 7-PART INVESTIGATIVE SERIES ON ALCOHOL'S HARM TO NEW MEXICO. THE SERIES TOUCHED ON MULTIPLE ASPECTS OF THE PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS. THE SERIES SPARKED NEW AWARENESS OF ALCOHOL'S CONTRIBUTION TO POOR HEALTH OUTCOMES IN THE STATE. IN ADDITION TO THE ARTICLES, THE SERIES INCLUDED A PUBLIC RESOURCE CALLED "ALCOHOL AND YOUR HEALTHX AND ANOTHER PIECE FOR JOURNALISTS WHO WANT TO REPORT MORE DEEPLY ON ALCOHOL.

GOOD GOVERNMENT REPORTING NMID CONTINUED OUR GOOD-GOVERNMENT PROJECT IN 2022. IN PARTICULAR, WE SPOTLIGHTED THE INCREASING RELIANCE ON NO-BID AND SOLE-SOURCE CONTRACTS BY NM GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, ESPECIALLY THE CURRENT GOVERNOR, AND A RELUCTANCE BY STATE LAWMAKERS TO ROOT OUT POTENTIAL WASTE AND FRAUD. A SEPARATE SERIES FOLLOWED THE STATE LEGISLATURE'S DECENNIAL PROCESS KNOWN AS REDISTRICTING TO HIGHLIGHT CONFLICTS BETWEEN SELF-INTEREST AND THE PUBLIC GOOD STATE LAWMAKERS OFTEN FEEL WHEN APPORTIONING VOTERS FOR LEGISTATIVE SEATS AROUND THE STATE. LAWMAKERS OFTEN FEEL WHEN APPORTIONING VOTERS FOR LEGISLATIVE SEATS AROUND THE STATE.

INDIGENOUS AFFAIRS AND EDUCATION NMID CONTINUED FOCUSING ON INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES AND EDUCATION. WE EXAMINED HOW INDIGENOUS STUDENTS ARE EXPELLED FAR MORE OFTEN THAN ANY OTHER GROUP, WITH ONE SCHOOL DISTRICT RESPONSIBLE - GALLUP-MCKINLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT. OUR FINDINGS FIT INTO A CONTEXT OF A HISTORY OF BIAS AND EXPLOITATION IN THE CITY OF GALLUP AND OTHER TOWNS THAT RING THE NAVAJO NATION. WE ALSO LOOKED AT CHALLENGES IDIGENOUS STUDENTS FACE ACCESSING CULTURALLY RELEVANT EDUCATION WITHIN THE STATE'S LARGEST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN ALBUQUERQUE.
