WE ARE DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION AND PROMOTION OF THE HISTORICAL, ECOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE MOJAVE DESERT, THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF CREATIVE ART, EDUCATION AND RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES, TO ENRICH THE COMMUNITY AND ATTRACT TOURISM.

CITY MURAL PROGRAM: A) THE CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT AND PAINTING OF AN OPEN-AIR GALLERY OF VIBRANT HISTORIC MURALS THAT ADORN THE COMMUNITY WALLS. B) THE LEADING OF A MONTHLY WALKING MURAL TOUR TO ATTRACT TOURISM AND INSPIRE INTEREST IN THE LOCAL HISTORY AND ART OPPORTUNITIES. C) NURTURE AND MAINTAIN AN ARTS CULTURE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY TO PROMOTE AND FACILITATE CREATIVE ARTS EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES FOR THE CITY OF BARSTOW.ALL OF THE ABOVE DIRECTIVES WORK TOGETHER TO BUILD COMMUNITY PRIDE, INSPIRE THE YOUTH AND GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH ENGAGING THEM IN DYNAMIC ACTIVITIES, BEAUTIFY THE CITY OF BARSTOW AND ENCOURAGE TOURISM.
FRIENDS OF DESERT DISCOVERY CENTER:A)TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A FORMAL AND INFORMAL EDUCATION CENTER WITH PROGRAMS FOCUSING ON THE NATURAL, CULTURAL, AND HISTORIC RESOURCES ASSOCIATED WITH THE MOJAVE DESERT. B) TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT AND ART BASED EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES FOCUSED LEARNING OF THE NATURAL WORLD WHILE INSPIRING RESPONSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP. THE CENTER SERVES 4,000 STUDENTS PER YEAR WITH FREE ENVIORNMENTAL EDUCATION AND HOSTS UPWARDS OF 12,000 VISITORS PER YEAR AND GROWING. C) TO HOST WEEKLY AND MONTHLY COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS COVERING WIDE VARIETY OF SUBJECTS INCLUDING SOLAR COOKING, GARDENING, RECYCLING, ART, AND WILDERNESS EXPLORATION. D) TO CREATE A NATIVE PLANT AND ANIMAL HABITAT, HOUSED IN THE OUTDOOR GARDEN AND POND AREA IS HOME TO LIVE SPECIMENS.
YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAM:THE AFTER SCHOOL YOUTH PROGRAM EXPLORES HISTORICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUBJECTS THROUGH A CREATIVE ARTS MEDIUM AND IS CURRENTLY IN ITS FOURTH YEAR. THE PROGRAM NURTURES APPRECIATION AND EXPRESSION OF CALIFORNIA HISTORY THROUGH THE PRODUCTION OF LARGE PUBLIC ART, BUILDS COMMUNITY SUPPORT, DETERS GRAFFITI AND OFFERS VOCATIONAL TRAINING THAT WILL FURTHER THE YOUTHS' SKILLS. THIS FIVE MONTH PROGRAM IS FILLED WITH HANDS ON LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, FIELD TRIPS AND PRESENTATIONS. MSM ALSO WORKS IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE DESERT DISCOVERY CENTER PARTNERSHIP TO OFFER A FREE JUNIOR NATURALIST PROGRAM TO VISITING EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND PERSONS OF STUDY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THIS PROGRAM OFFERS PARTICIPANTS INVALUABLE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN SEMINARS AND DISCUSSIONS THAT LEAD TO A BROADER AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP.
