SCHOOL OF LIVING IS AN EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO LEARNING AND TEACHING THE PHILOSOPHY, PRACTICES, AND PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE LIVING THAT ARE SELF-EMPOWERING FOR INDIVIDUALS WITHIN THE GENERAL AIM OF ESTABLISHING DECENTRALIZED, ECOLOGICALLY SOUND, SELF-GOVERNED, AND HUMANE COMMUNITIES. ALL ITS RESOURCES, BUT MOST SPECIFICALLY THE LAND IT HOLDS IN TRUST, ARE HELD IN RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP FOR PRESENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS.

IN 2021 THE HEATHCOTE EDUCATION COMMITTEE'S (HEC'S) MAIN PROGRAM WAS ITS EDUCATIONAL FARM, OBERON FARM AT HEATHCOTE COMMUNITY. OBERON FARM INITIATED A FULL-SEASON CSA STARTING ON APRIL 9 OF 2021 SERVED ABOUT 8 PAID CSA SHAREHOLDERS AND 10 WORKING SHAREHOLDERS THROUGHOUT THE GROWING SEASON. OBERON FARM ALSO PARTICIPATED IN A FARMERS' MARKET IN DRUID HILL PARK IN WEST BALTIMORE. HEATHCOTE MEMBERS AND APPLICANTS CONTRIBUTED MANY WORK-SHARE AND VOLUNTEER HOURS TO THE PROJECT. FARM MANAGER MATT BELMONT DEMONSTRATED PERMACULTURE AND ORGANIC AGRICULTURE PRINCIPLES AS HE CULTIVATED OUR VEGETABLES, FRUIT, FLOWERS, AND HERBS. MATT ALSO OFFERED ON SITE YOGA CLASSES FOR HEATHCOTE'S INTERNS AND MEMBERS. THE DESIGN FOR THE ACCESSIBLE GARDEN WAS COMPLETED AND 4 ACCESSIBLE GARDEN BEDS WERE INSTALLED DURING 2 VOLUNTEER DAYS. HEC'S VOLUNTEER AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (VIP) ENGAGED 4 INTERNATIONAL INTERNS FROM THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF BALTIMORE COUNTY'S SUSTAINABLE HORTICULTURE PROGRAM WHO BEGAN THEIR INTERNSHIPS IN THE FALL. IN ADDITION, 5 VOLUNTEERS CAME FOR A 1-WEEK STAY AT HEATHCOTE DURING 2021 AND HELPED WITH PROJECTS ON THE FARM AND AROUND THE COMMUNITY. HEC ALSO HOSTED 40 VISITORS IN 2021 WHO CAME TO LEARN ABOUT HEATHCOTE AND TAKE A TOUR. WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CHESAPEAKE EDUCATION ARTS & RESEARCH SOCIETY (CHEARS), HEC GAVE ONE WEBINAR FOR THE CHESAPEAKE INTERGENERATIONAL OPEN SEED QUEST PROJECT.
SCHOOL OF LIVING'S COMMUNITY LAND TRUST (CLT) INVOLVES 6 PARCELS OF LAND IN PENNSYLVANIA, MARYLAND, AND VIRGINIA. EACH PARCEL SUPPORTS A RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY THAT INVOLVES A LIVING AND LEARNING CENTER, DEMONSTRATING AND TEACHING COOPERATIVE COMMUNITY LIVING, ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, AND NATURAL LIVING. IN 2021, WE CONTINUED TO WORK ON DEVELOPING A NEW LEASE FOR OUR AMHERST COUNTY, VIRGINIA PARCEL. THIS PARCEL IS BEING LEASED TO STELLAR ROOTS, A COLLECTIVE OF BLACK, BROWN, AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLE, ROOTED IN HEALING AND IN SERVICE OF LAND BASED COMMUNITY LIVING.
PERMACULTURE LIVING LANDS TRUST FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING AN AGROFORESTRY COMMONS, WITH WATERSHED/FOODSHED BASED ASSESSMENTS OF THE RONDOUT VALLEY IN ULSTER COUNTY,. AND ADJACENT ORANGE COUNTY, BOTH IN THE HUDSON VALLEY OF NEW YORK. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RECOMMENDATION FROM THESE ASSESSMENTS WAS INITIATED WITH PLANTING OF EDIBLE TREE CROPS (SUCH AS CHESTNUTS, WALNUTS, HICKORIES, HICANS) AS PART OF RIPARIAN BUFFER INSTALLATIONS, AND WITH A DETAILED FARM HUB/TRAINING CENTER TRANSITION PLAN FOR A 400 ACRE SITE LOCATED 80 MILES WEST OF NEW YORK CITY. THE TRUST ALSO FOCUSED ON PROJECT DEVELOPMENT FOR AGROFORESTRY SITES IN CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA AND THE MINNEAPOLIS AREA. PERMACULTURE LIVING LANDS TRUST PREPARED ITS APPLICATION FOR TAX EXEMPT STATUS AS A NONPROFIT LAND TRUST.
