THE HOME INSTRUCTION FOR PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL YOUNGSTERS (HIPPY) IS A PARENT INVOLVEMENT, SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM THAT HELPS PARENTS PREPARE THEIR 3 TO 4 YEAR OLDS FOR KINDERGARTEN. LIFE HIRED 1 COORDINATOR AND 3 HOME VISITORS TO WORK WITH THE PARENTS. THE GRANT REVENUE WAS TO COVER THE OPERATING COSTS FOR THE PROGRAM. DURING 2021, LIFE SERVED 10 FAMILIES UNDER THIS PROGRAM.
COMMUNITY ORGANIZER PROGRAM: LIFE BEGAN A NEW PROGRAM IN 2021 CALLED THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZER INSTITUTE. ITS GOAL IS TO BRING IN FUNDING AND SUPPORT FROM OUTSIDE AGENCIES AND FOUNDATIONS TO ESTABLISH A TRAINING PLATFORM FOR MEMBERS OF MAIKER COMMUNITIES TO LEARN THE SKILLS, AND BE PROVIDED THE RESOURCES NEEDED TO BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF BRINGING RESOURCES TO THEIR COMMUNITIES SUCH AS FOOD SECURITY, HEALTHCARE, TRANSPORTATION, AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THE ORGANIZERS WILL NOT ONLY BRING RESOURCES TO THE COMMUNITIES, BUT WILL ALSO BRING THEIR VOICES TO LOCAL CITY COUNCIL, THE STATE AND EVEN NATIONAL PLATFORMS TO INFORM LEADERS AND THE PUBLIC OF THEIR CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSES IN OUR COMMUNITY IN AN EFFORT TO COMBAT NIMBYISM AND PREJUDICE IN THE MARKETPLACE AGAINST THOSE OF LOWER INCOME.
THE COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT WAS PILOTED BY THREE OF OUR COMMUNITIES AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF LOCAL BUSINESSES, MAIKER HOUSING PARTNERS, AND FOUNDATION FUNDS RAISED BY THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS, 24 RAISED BED GARDENS WERE BUILT AND PLANTED IN 2021. THE COMMUNITY HELD A FARMER'S MARKET AT THE END OF THE SEASON PROVIDING FRESH VEGETABLES AND COOKING TRAINING TO OVER 250 FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY.
OTHER PROGRAMS REVENUE/EXPENSE INCLUDE LOAN FORGIVENESS TO LIFE FROM MAIKER HOUSING PARTNERS; AN IN-KIND DONATION OF MAINTENANCE MATERIALS AND APPLIANCES FOR USE IN OUR LOW INCOME PROPERTIES; AND DONATIONS FOR OUR YEAR END SANTA-SHOP PROGRAM TO SUPPORT FAMILIES IN NEED FOR THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY.
