FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES - WITH 20 YEARS OF SERVICE, CENTRO LATINO OF IOWA (CLI) CONTINUES TO SUPPORT THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY OF SOUTHWEST IOWA TO GAIN EQUITABLE ACCESS TO LOCAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADVANCEMENT. CLI PROVIDES CULTURALLY COMPETENT AND LANGUAGE ACCESSIBLE RESOURCE NAVIGATION AND CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES. OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ADVOCACY CONTINUE TO PROVIDE DIRECT SUPPORT TO FAMILIES THROUGH INTENSE HELP WITH NAVIGATING THE SOCIAL SYSTEMS THROUGH THE FOLLOWING: FILLING-OUT APPLICATIONS, SETTING-UP APPOINTMENTS, TRANSLATING DOCUMENTS, INTERPRETING DURING INTERVIEWS, AND MAKING AND FOLLOW-UP REFERRALS. ORGANIZATIONS APPROACHED INCLUDE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND NON-PROFIT AGENCIES SUCH AS THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES (MEDICARE, SSI, DHS), THE MUNICIPAL HOUSING AUTHORITY, POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT, POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY CLERK, IOWA WORKFORCE AND MANY OTHER NON-PROFITS AND COLLABORATIVE PARTNERS. ADULT EDUCATION - OUR VISION IS TO BUILD A SUSTAINABLE, THRIVING GATHERING PLACE THAT SUPPORTS THE WHOLE PERSON WHERE EVERYONE IS WELCOME. CLI CELEBRATES OUR CLIENTS' SUCCESSES WHEN THEY ACQUIRE ENGLISH SKILLS THROUGH OUR ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) PROGRAM, GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL BY OBTAINING THEIR HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY TEST (HISET) CERTIFICATE OR BECOME US CITIZENS AFTER PARTICIPATING IN OUR US NATURALIZATION CLASSES. ADULT EDUCATION ALSO INCLUDES FINANCIAL LITERACY CLASSES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY AND VERIDIAN CREDIT UNION, HOSTING AMERICORPS RISE MEMBERS WHO LEARN HOW TO EFFECTIVELY ENGAGE IN A BUSINESS SETTING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLASSES WHERE INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES LEARN BUSINESS STRATEGIES TO BEGIN THEIR OWN BUSINESSES.
CULTURAL EDUCATION - THE HISPANIC/LATINO POPULATION MAKES UP ALMOST 8% OF THE POPULATION IN POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, AND 10.2 % OF THE POPULATION IN COUNCIL BLUFFS. IN THE PAST 5 YEARS, THESE PERCENTAGES HAVE INCREASED BY UP TO 145%. ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL EQUITY INDEX (HTTP://NATIONALEQUITYATLAS.ORG NATIONALEQUITYATLAS.ORG), IN 5 MORE YEARS THE HISPANIC POPULATION WILL BE AROUND 14% IN THE OMAHA-COUNCIL BLUFFS METRO AREA AND CONTINUE TO GROW EXPONENTIALLY. WITH THIS CONTINUED GROWTH, THE NEED FOR COMMUNITY LEADERS IN GOVERNMENT AND ON BOARDS OF DIRECTORS IS CRUCIAL TO CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT RECOGNIZES AND CELEBRATES CULTURAL DIVERSITY. CLI WILL CONTINUE PROVIDING CULTURAL EXPERIENCES SUCH AS THE LATINO FESTIVAL AND OTHER CELEBRATIONS, IMPORTANT FORUMS THAT INTRODUCE HISPANIC LEADERS TO COMMUNITY, REGIONAL AND STATE LEADERS AND EVALUATE, IMPLEMENT AND RE-COMMISSION THE COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT PROCESS IN ORDER TO PERFORM AND EFFECTIVELY SUPPORT THE HISPANIC/LATINO COMMUNITY OF COUNCIL BLUFFS AND POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY.
