EDUCATION- ENA PROVIDED ONGOING SUPPORT TO EMERGENCY NURSES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BY SUPPLYING THE RESOURCES NEEDED FOR THEIR WORK ON THE FRONT LINES:- A WEBPAGE DEDICATED TO COVID-19 PROVIDES ESSENTIAL RESOURCES, INCLUDING CLINICAL BEST PRACTICES, CONSENSUS GUIDELINES AND SUPPORT WITH PPE THROUGH OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH GET US PPE.- WE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE AMERICAN NURSES FOUNDATION, ANA, APNA AND AACN ON THE WELL-BEING INITIATIVE TO OFFER RESOURCES THAT SUPPORT THE MENTAL HEALTH AND RESILIENCE OF NURSES. ENA PREVIOUSLY TOOK THE LEAD WITH "NURSES TOGETHER: CONNECTING THROUGH CONVERSATIONS," A FREE RESOURCE THAT PROVIDES NURSES THE OPPORTUNITY TO VIRTUALLY CONNECT WITH NURSING PEERS IN A JUDGEMENT-FREE ZONE TO SHARE THOUGHTS AND SEEK SUPPORT.- 2021 WAS AN EXCITING YEAR FOR ENA WITH THE DEBUT OF ENA UNIVERSITY. ENA'S NEW CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR EMERGENCY NURSING EDUCATION FEATURES A ROBUST PORTFOLIO OF ONLINE COURSES, RESOURCES, MENTORING AND INDUSTRY-SUPPORTED CONTENT. CLINICAL PRACTICE-NOVICE AND CLINICAL PRACTICE-COMPETENT PATHWAYS WERE ALSO LAUNCHED AS PART OF THE ENA UNIVERSITY PLATFORM TO GUIDE AN EMERGENCY NURSES' EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY BASED ON THEIR CAREER STAGE. - ENA BOLSTERED ITS TRIAGE EDUCATION OFFERINGS WITH THE ACQUISITION OF TRIAGE FIRST. COUPLED WITH THE EMERGENCY SEVERITY INDEX, THE NEW CURRICULUM EXPANDS TRIAGE LEARNING TO BENEFIT ED NURSES OF ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS BY USING A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO PATIENT TRIAGE THAT INCLUDES EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES. - 15 COURSE PROGRAMS WERE INTRODUCED AS A MIX OF NEW AND UPDATED CONTENT WITH TOPICS INCLUDING FIREARM INJURY PREVENTION, GERIATRIC PATIENT CARE, THE ED NURSE'S ROLE IN A DISASTER AND PEDIATRIC PHARMACOLOGY COURSE FOR ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSES. - A POSITION STATEMENT ON HEMORRHAGE CONTROL WAS RELEASED ALONG WITH FIVE REVISED POSITION STATEMENTS WITH SUBJECTS INCLUDING MEDICATION MANAGEMENT IN THE EMERGENCY CARE SETTING, STAFFING AND PRODUCTIVITY IN THE EMERGENCY CARE SETTING, PROTOCOL DRIVEN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT OBSERVATION UNITS, RESUSCITATIVE DECISIONS IN THE EMERGENCY CARE SETTING, AND MITIGATING THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON HEALTH AND HEALTHCARE: THE ROLE OF THE EMERGENCY NURSE.- ENA'S RESEARCH TEAM RELEASED SIX PUBLICATIONS WITH TOPICS RANGING FROM US EMERGENCY NURSES' KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EDUCATIONAL NEEDS IN FORENSIC NURSING, SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS IN EMERGENCY NURSING RESEARCH, THE IMPACT OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ON US HEALTHCARE WORKERS: A DISCURSIVE ANALYSIS OF FRONTLINE SECONDARY TRAUMATIC STRESS USING TWITTER DATA, VALIDATION OF A GROUNDED THEORY OF NURSE BULLYING IN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT SETTINGS. ESTABLISHING RESEARCH PRIORITIES FOR THE EMERGENCY SEVERITY INDEX USING A MODIFIED DELPHI APPROACH. TRIAGE DECISIONS INVOLVING PREGNANCY-CAPABLE PATIENTS: EDUCATIONAL DEFICITS AND EMERGENCY NURSES' PERCEPTIONS OF RISK. IN ADDITION, COLLABORATIVE PUBLISHED WORK INCLUDED ADHERENCE TO GUIDELINE CREATION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION IN THE EMERGENCY DEVELOPMENT: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND IMPROVING ED EMERGENCY SEVERITY INDEX ACUITY ASSIGNMENT USING MACHINE LEARNING AND CLINICAL NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING.- ENA IS CONTINUALLY STRIVING TO CREATE AND FOSTER A CULTURE AND CLIMATE OF MUTUAL RESPECT, INCLUSIVITY AND EQUITY THAT EMPOWERS THE ASSOCIATION'S MEMBERS, VOLUNTEERS, AND STAFF TO CREATE HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION AND WITHIN THE NURSING COMMUNITY. ENA'S DEI COMMITTEE, A BOARD SUBCOMMITTEE AND A STAFF LEVEL TEAM ARE SHAPING THE ASSOCIATION'S VISION IN THESE IMPORTANT AREAS TO IMPROVE EMERGENCY NURSING, BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH KEY PARTNERS AND DRIVING CHANGE. THE FOLLOWING WERE KEY DEI INITIATIVES FROM 2021: - DEVELOPED AND DEPLOYED SURVEYS. - STRENGTHENED ENA'S EXTERNAL PRESENCE ON DEI ENGAGEMENT.- FOSTERED A LEADERSHIP PIPELINE FOR THE UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS.- DEVELOPED EMERGENCY NURSING 2021 DEI SESSION AND EXPERIENCE.- DEI WEBPAGE WITH RESOURCES.- STAFF DEI AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: ON-GOING CELEBRATION AND RECOGNITION OF DIVERSITY.
CONFERENCE- MORE THAN 3,700 EMERGENCY NURSES ATTENDED THE FULLY VIRTUAL EMERGENCY NURSING 2021 ANNUAL CONFERENCE WHICH FEATURED DOZENS OF EDUCATION SESSIONS AND PEER NETWORKING ENGAGEMENT. ON-DEMAND SESSIONS WERE AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER THE EVENT.
MEMBERSHIP- EMERGENCY NURSES ASSOCIATION MAINTAINED A MEMBERSHIP OF 50,000 AND OVERALL MEMBERSHIP RETENTION INCREASED FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR.
- ENA'S GOVERNMENT RELATIONS STAFF WORKED WITH CONGRESS AND ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS ON SEVERAL KEY PIECES OF LEGISLATION:- DR. LORNA BREEN HEALTH CARE PROVIDER PROTECTION ACT INCLUDED NEW AUTHORIZATIONS TO PROVIDE RESOURCES TO RESPOND TO GROWING LEVELS OF HEALTH CARE WORKER MENTAL HEALTH, BEHAVIORAL WELLNESS, AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES IN THE U.S.- EFFECTIVE SUICIDE SCREENING AND ASSESSMENT IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT ACT WOULD PROVIDE NEW RESOURCES TO IMPROVE THE IDENTIFICATION AND TREATMENT OF EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT PATIENTS WITH SUICIDAL IDEATION.- WORKPLACE VIOLENCE PREVENTION FOR HEALTH CARE AND SOCIAL SERVICE WORKERS ACT - COVID-19 WORKPLACE PROTECTIONS FOR EMERGENCY NURSES.
