ADULT LITERACY ONE-ON-ONE PROGRAM WORKS WITH ANYONE 18 YEARS OR OLDER ON ANY LITERACY GOAL THEY WANT TO WORK ON. MANY OF OUR LEARNERS ARE WORKING TOWARDS A GED/HI-SET, BUT OTHER LEARNERS ARE WORKING ON FINANCIAL LITERACY, WRITING SKILLS, INTERVIEWING AND RESUME WRITING, DRIVER'S LICENSE AND MILITARY TESTING, ETC. DURING THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2024, WE TRAINED OVER 20 LEARNERS IN OUR ADULT LITERACY ONE-ON-ONE PROGRAM.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM SERVED OVER 475 STUDENTS DURING THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2024. THESE STUDENTS WORK TO IMPROVE READING, WRITING AND SPEAKING ENGLISH. THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF INSTRUCTION WERE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS DURING THE YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2024, TEACHING OVER 27 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. DAY AND EVENING CLASSES WERE PROVIDED.
YOUTH & FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAMMING IS HELD IN MURFREESBORO CITY AND RUTHERFORD COUNTY TITLE 1 SCHOOLS AND THIS PROGRAM IS A PARTNERSHIP WITH MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY, LIPSCOMB AND TREVECCA'S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. THE KNOWLEDGE SHARING WITH STUDENTS DURING THESE PROGRAMS ALLOWS THEM TO GET BACK ON GRADE LEVEL AND PROVIDES THEIR PARENTS WITH STRATEGIES THAT THEY CAN USE AT HOME. THE PARENTS ARE ALSO GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIGN UP FOR OUR ADULT LITERACY PROGRAMS DURING THESE EVENTS.FAMILY LITERACY ALSO HAS A PROGRAM FOR PRE-SCHOOL STUDENTS TO PREPARE THEM TO BE KINDERGARTEN READY. OUR IMAGINATION STATIONS ARE HELD IN LOW-INCOME AREAS AND AGAIN THE CHILDREN AND PARENTS LEARN ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF READING. AT ALL OF OUR FAMILY LITERACY EVENTS, THE CHILDREN GO HOME WITH THE BOOK THAT WAS STUDIED. FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WE HAVE STARTED ADULT BOOK CLUBS WHERE STUDENTS READ CONTEMPORARY YOUNG ADULT FICTION WITH THEMES THAT STUDENTS TODAY FIND RELATABLE TO THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES. STUDENTS FACILITATE THE DISCUSSIONS AROUND PLOT, CHARACTER AND LIFE. THIS PROGRAM FOSTERS A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND A SHARED EXPERIENCE FOR THE STUDENTS.
