FOUNDED IN 1981 AS A PROGRAM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA, HIFF WAS INDEPENDENTLY INCORPORATED IN 1990 WITH A MISSION OF FOSTERING INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH FILM. HIFF ADVANCES THIS MISSION THROUGH TWO ANNUAL FILM FESTIVALS, EDUCATION INITIATIVES FOR K-12 AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, INDUSTRY AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS FOR HAWAII-BASED CREATIVES, AND FREE COMMUNITY SCREENINGS AND EVENTS.

IN 2022, THE HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (HIFF) PRESENTED TWO FILM FESTIVALS, MULTIPLE EDUCATIONAL AND INDUSTRY INITIATIVES, FREE COMMUNITY SCREENINGS AND NETWORKING EVENTS, AND MULTIPLE ONLINE/VIRTUAL FILM SCREENINGS. IN 2022, HIFF SHOWCASED 276 FILMS FROM 37 COUNTRIES. HIFF 2022 HELD 294 SCREENINGS, BOTH IN PERSON AND ONLINE, TO AN AUDIENCE OF APPROXIMATELY 52,000 ACROSS 34 STATES AND FIVE COUNTRIES. IN 2022, 178 UNIQUE FILMMAKERS, ACTORS, INTERNATIONAL MEDIA, AND INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD PARTICIPATED IN THESE FILM EXHIBITION PROGRAMS VIA LIVE PANELS, SEMINARS, DISCUSSIONS, EVENTS, AND Q&A'S WITH HIFF AUDIENCES.
IN 2022, HIFF PRESENTED SIX FREE EDUCATION PROGRAMS SERVING 13,849 PARTICIPANTS IN THE EDUCATION COMMUNITY: GUEST FILMMAKER PROGRAM (SERVED 635 STUDENTS IN 34 CLASSES FROM 30 HAWAII SCHOOLS / 19 VISITING FILMMAKERS), YOUTH EDUCATION SCREENINGS/YES PROGRAM (SERVED 7,638 STUDENTS ACROSS 37 HAWAII SCHOOLS), STUDENT SHOWCASE (3,310 PARTICIPANTS), FUTURE FILMMAKERS WORKSHOPS + SHOWCASE (2,266 PARTICIPANTS), THE HIFF STUDENT FILMMAKER COMMITTEE (7 COLLEGE STUDENTS), AND THE HIFF INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (15 COLLEGE STUDENTS). IN 2022, HIFF ALSO PRESENTED MULTIPLE FREE INDUSTRY PROGRAMS INCLUDING PANEL DISCUSSIONS, SEMINARS, FILMMAKER Q&A'S, & ONLINE EVENTS TO SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN OUR PACIFIC ISLAND CREATIVE INDUSTRIES: 63 FILMMAKER DISCUSSIONS (TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 6,411), 13 LIVE PANELS, SEMARS & MASTERCLASSES (TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 8,212), HIFF ONLINE CREATIVES & CRITICS IMMERSIVE (6 MENTORS AND 10 EARLY CAREER PARTICIPANTS) ALL HIFF 2022 EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES AND INDUSTRY PROGRAMS WERE PRESENTED FOR FREE TO PARTICIPANTS STATEWIDE (ACROSS 4 ISLANDS). HIFF CONSIDERS THESE PROGRAMS A SUCCESS WITH EXTREMELY POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS, STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AUDIENCES, AND FILMMAKERS. THESE PROGRAMS SERVE TO EXPAND PARTICIPANTS' KNOWLEDGE ABOUT FILMMAKING AND THE CREATIVE MEDIA INDUSTRY, INCREASE APPRECIATION FOR FILM AS AN ART FORM, INSPIRE STUDENTS AND FILMMAKERS IN THEIR MEDIA-RELATED WORK, AND HEIGHTEN CROSS-CULTURAL AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING.
