FOUNDED IN 1981 AS A PROGRAM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA, HIFF WAS INDEPENDENTLY INCORPORATED IN 1990 WITH A MISSION OF FOSTERING INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING THROUGH FILM. HIFF ADVANCES THIS MISSION THROUGH TWO FILM FESTIVALS, EDUCATION INITIATIVES, AND YEARLY PROGRAMS.

IN 2021, THE HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (HIFF) PRESENTED TWO FILMS FESTIVALS, MULTIPLE EDUCATIONAL AND INDUSTRY INITIATIVES, A FREE VIRTUAL REALITY EXHIBIT, AND VARIOUS ONLINE FILM SCREENINGS. THE HIFF 2021 SPRING SHOWCASE SERIES AND FALL FESTIVAL FEATURED A TOTAL OF 384 FILMS FROM 35 COUNTRIES. IN 2021, HIFF HELD 300 SCREENINGS, BOTH IN-PERSON AND ONLINE, TO AN AUDIENCE OF 89,048 ACROSS 48 US STATES. IN 2021, 284 DIFFERENT FILMMAKERS, ACTORS, INTERNATIONAL MEDIA, AND INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD PARTICIPATED IN THESE FILM EXHIBITION PROGRAMS ACROSS LIVE PANELS, SEMINARS, DISCUSSIONS, AND EVENTS, AND Q&A'S WITH AUDIENCES.
IN 2021, HIFF PRESENTED FIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS - GUEST FILMMAKER PROGRAM, CULTURAL & VISUAL LITERACY PROGRAM, STUDENT SHOWCASE, FILMMAKER Q&A PROGRAM, AND FREE PUBLIC SEMINARS. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, HIFF TOOK MANY EFFORTS TO ENSURE SAFETY FOR ALL STUDENTS, FILMMAKERS, AUDIENCES, AND EDUCATORS WHO TOOK PART IN THESE PROGRAMS AND SUCCESSFULLY TRANSFERRED ALL PROGRAMS TO AN ONLINE SPACE. WITH YET ANOTHER YEAR OF EXTREMELY POSITIVE FEEDBACK, 2021 WAS A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR THE FESTIVAL'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND INDEPENDENT SEMINARS. ALL EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES AND PROGRAMS WERE PRESENTED FOR FREE TO AUDIENCES STATEWIDE. HIFF'S 2021 EDUCATION PROGRAMS HOSTED A RECORD NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS DURING THE FALL FESTIVAL ACROSS THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: THE GUEST FILMMAKER PROGRAM (GFP) (567 PARTICIPANTS), YOUTH EDUCATION SCREENINGS PROGRAM (YES) (6,402 PARTICIPANTS), STUDENT SHOWCASE (225 PARTICIPANTS), DANIEL K. INOUYE INSTITUTE FUTURE FILMMAKERS SHOWCASE (1,078 PARTICIPANTS) FILMMAKER Q&A PROGRAM (3,189 PARTICIPANTS), AND OUR FREE PUBLIC SEMINARS (14,140 PARTICIPANTS). IN 2021, HIFF HELD ITS 41ST ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL FROM NOVEMBER 4TH-28TH, 2021 AND PRESENTED SIX EDUCATION PROGRAMS THAT WERE HELD VIRTUALLY TO ENSURE SAFETY AND FOLLOW CDC GUIDELINES FOR THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: GUEST FILMMAKER PROGRAM, YOUTH EDUCATION SCREENINGS PROGRAM, STUDENT SHOWCASE (K-12 GRADE), FUTURE FILMMAKERS SHOWCASE (6-12TH GRADE), FILMMAKER Q&A PROGRAM, AND FREE VIRTUAL PUBLIC SEMINARS. ALTOGETHER, 22 PRIMARY AND SECONDARY CLASSES ON O'AHU, MAUI, HAWAI'I ISLAND, AND KAUA'I, 2,430 STUDENTS, 42 TEACHERS, AND 25,754 MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL PUBLIC BENEFITED FROM HIFF'S EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH EFFORTS. THEIR PARTICIPATION HELPED TO EXPAND PARTICIPANTS' KNOWLEDGE ABOUT FILMMAKING AND THE MEDIA INDUSTRY, INCREASE APPRECIATION FOR FILM AS AN ART FORM, INSPIRE STUDENTS IN THEIR MEDIA-RELATED CLASS WORK, AND HEIGHTEN CROSS-CULTURAL AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING. HIFF ALSO PRESENTED MULTIPLE STUDENT FILM PROGRAMS AS PART OF THE 41ST FESTIVAL INCLUDING A FUTURE FILMMAKERS PROGRAM (STUDENT FILMS FROM 6-12 GRADES), AND THE HAWAII STUDENT FILM SHOWCASE FEATURING WORK FROM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ACROSS THE STATE. HIFF ALSO HOSTED TEN UNIVERSITY STUDENT INTERNS IN 2021 THAT HAD THE OPTION TO RECEIVE SCHOOL CREDIT FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION AT HIFF.
