THE JEWISH FILM INSTITUTE CHAMPIONS BOLD FILMS AND FILMMAKERS THAT EXPAND AND EVOLVE THE JEWISH STORY FOR AUDIENCES EVERYWHERE.

THE SAN FRANCISCO JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL (SFJFF), IS THE SIGNATURE PROGRAM OF THE JEWISH FILM INSTITUTE. DUE TO COVID 19, JFI HELD AN ATTENUATED HYBRID IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL SUMMER FESTIVAL. THE SUMMER FESTIVAL INCLUDED A RETURN TO THE CASTRO THEATER AND AN INCREASED NATIONAL REACH FOR JFI'S VIRTUAL OFFERINGS. JFI EXHIBITION PROGRAMMING INCLUDES WINTERFEST, A WEEK-LONG VIRTUAL PROGRAM AND HANUKKAH FEST, EIGHT NIGHTS OF VIRTUAL SCREENINGS. IN ADDITION, JFI SHOWCASES MONTHLY SHORTS AND OCCASIONAL ONE NIGHT SCREENINGS.
THE JFI COMPLETION GRANTS PROGRAM PROVIDES FINISHING FUNDS TO EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED FILMMAKERS FOR ORIGINAL STORIES THAT PROMOTE THOUGHTFUL CONSIDERATION OF JEWISH HISTORY, LIFE, CULTURE, MEMORY, AND IDENTITY. ESTABLISHED IN 2020, JFI HAS AWARDED NEARLY $250,000 SINCE THE PROGRAM'S INCEPTION. PROJECTS ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION INCLUDE NARRATIVES, DOCUMENTARIES, SHORTS, EPISODIC PROGRAMS, OR WEB SERIES. JFI COMPLETION GRANTS RESPOND TO A CRITICAL LACK OF FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE FOR INDEPENDENT MEDIA PROJECTS THAT PURSUED EXPANSIVE, NUANCED INTERPRETATIONS OF JEWISH TOPICS. JFI COMPLETION GRANTS RECOGNIZE PROJECTS THAT DEMONSTRATE AN ABILITY OR AMBITION TO ENTERTAIN AND ENGAGE US, TO BUILD BRIDGES BETWEEN COMMUNITIES, TO TURN CONVERSATION INTO ACTION, AND TO REFRAME UNDERSTANDING OF JEWISH CULTURES AND IDENTITIES.
JFIS FILMMAKER IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM, NOW IN ITS NINTH YEAR, SUPPORTS ORIGINAL JEWISH-THEMED FILMS FROM EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED FILMMAKERS IN ALL CINEMATIC FORMS AND LENGTHS THAT OFFER FRESH, CHALLENGING PERSPECTIVES, ENGAGE AUDIENCES ACROSS CULTURAL LINES, AND REFLECT THE FULL BREADTH AND DIVERSITY OF JEWISH EXPERIENCE. THE RESIDENCY IS THE ONLY NATIONAL PROGRAM OF ITS KIND OFFERING SUPPORT TO INDEPENDENT, JEWISH-THEMED MEDIA PROJECTS. RESIDENTS MEET MONTHLY AS A COHORT AND BI-MONTHLY VIRTUALLY FOR TARGETED WORKSHOPS WITH INDUSTRY EXPERTS, AND CONVENE IN-PERSON AT THE ANNUAL SFJFF. THE PROGRAM CULMINATES IN A PITCH FORUM WHERE FILMMAKERS PRESENT THEIR WORK TO INDUSTRY EXPERTS AND THE PUBLIC FOR FEEDBACK, ADVICE, AND POTENTIAL FUNDING.
