CENTER FOR INDEPENDENCE OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES (CID) IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT HAS SERVED SAN MATEO COUNTY FOR MORE THAN FORTY-THREE YEARS. THE ORGANIZATION IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS EXCEPTIONAL VISIBILITY AND RESPONSIVENESS TO THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES.

THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES ARE AT THE HEART OF INDEPENDENT LIVING PHILOSOPHY AND OUR ACTIVITIES; OUR GOAL IS TO CONTINUE TO EXPAND AND ENHANCE THEM:1) PEER COUNSELING SERVICE FACILITATES REGULAR GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL PEER SUPPORT SERVICES. FUNCTIONING AS SUPPORT GROUPS, THESE METHODS OFFER THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SOCIAL CONTACTS AND FRIENDSHIP.2) INDEPENDENT LIVING TRAINING AND SUPPORT SERVICE ASSISTS INDIVIDUALS IN DEVELOPING PERSONAL CARE HABITS, COPING WITH DISABILITIES, FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, SOCIAL SKILLS, HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT, AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES.3) EVERY CID STAFF MEMBER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ALL-IMPORTANT INDIVIDUAL AND SYSTEMS CHANGE ADVOCACY. WE TEACH CONSUMERS HOW TO ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES TO RECEIVE SERVICES SUCH AS HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION, GOVERNMENT BENEFITS, DIRECT ACCESS TO PUBLIC SPACES, AS WELL AS CONSULT WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND COMMUNITY LEADERS ON THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) AND THE ADOPTION OF THE ACT'S PROVISIONS. 4) OUR ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY ACTIVITIES IDENTIFY INDEPENDENT LIVING NEEDS, PROVIDES RESOURCE COORDINATION FOR HOME MODIFICATION, AND ASSISTS IN FINDING FUNDING IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS FOR OUR CLIENTS. WE PROVIDE EXPERT ADVICE FOR, AND SUPPLY OF, ASSISTIVE DEVICES, SUCH AS WHEEL CHAIRS, HOSPITAL BEDS, AND EQUIPMENT FOR THE DEAF AND BLIND. CID IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION IN SAN MATEO COUNTY THAT PROVIDES FREE EQUIPMENT FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. 5) CID IS ONE OF ONLY A FEW CILS THAT RUN A HOUSING ACCESSIBILITY MODIFICATION (HAM) PROGRAM, WHERE WE PROVIDE CUSTOM BUILT RAMPS AND OTHER INSTALLATIONS, SUCH AS GRAB BARS AND RAILS IN CONSUMER'S HOMES.
