THE BUTTE COUNTY SHERIFF'S MOUNTED POSSE WAS FOUNDED IN DECEMBER 1941 AFTER THE START OF WORLD WAR II TO FILL THE VOID LEFT BY DEPUTIES ENLISTED IN THE MILITARY. THE POSSE WAS THE FIRST BUTTE COUNTY VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS ORGANIZATION SHALL BE TO UPHOLD AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, THE COUNTY OF BUTTE AND THE CITIES THERIN. TO MAINTAIN LAW AND ORDER, TO FOSTER AND PERPETUATE A SPIRIT OF GOOD FELLOWSHIP AND FRATERNALISM AMONG ITS MEMBERS, TO PROMOTE A FEELING OF MUTUAL GOODWILL BETWEEN THE COUNTY OF BUTTE AND THEIR SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES AND THE REKINDLING OF THAT PIONEER LAW-ABIDING SPIRIT OF OUR FOREFATHERS AND THEIR LOVE OF FINE HORSE FLESH.

THE ORGANIZATION HAS MAINTAINED ITS PROPERTY SO THAT IT CAN CONTINUE TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY AND ITS' OFFICERS BY PROVIDING ONGOING TRAINING WHICH IS VITAL FOR THE AREA.
THE ORGANIZATION RECEIVED GENERAL DONATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC. THIS ALLOWED THE ORGANIZATION TO ASSIST MANY CAMP FIRE VICTIMS. MANY OF THESE VICTIMS WERE LOCAL PUBLIC SERVICE EMPLOYEES. THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE PROVIDED ASSISTANCE TO THESE EMPLOYEES ALLOWED THEM TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE IN THEIR COMMUNITY ROLES.
A PROGRAM FOR FUNCTITIONAL FITNESS WAS ADDED FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE EMPLOYEES. THIS PROGRAM ALLOWS THE STAFF THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL SUPPORT THEY NEED TO PERFORM THEIR DUTIES IN A SAFE MANNER. IT PROVIDES THE NECESSARY EMOTIONAL SUPPORT TO RELIEVE THE STRESSES OF BEING IN PUBLIC SAFETY.
