Part 3 - Line 4a
SAN JOSE DANCE THEATER HAS MOUNTED AND PERFORMED THE FULL-LENGTH "THE NUTCRACKER" BALLET IN SAN JOSE FOR 56 CONSECUTIVE YEARS. THE 55TH ANNUAL PRODUCTION SCHEDULED FOR LIVE PERFORMANCES WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA IN DECEMBER, 2020 WAS CANCELED DUE TO THE COVID PANDEMIC. WE WERE ABLE TO GO BACK TO LIVE PERFORMANCES IN DECEMBER 2021 BUT OUR CAPACITY WAS LIMITED TO 1,000 PATRONS PER PERFORMANCE DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS. THE NUTCRACKER, ASIDE FROM ACADEMY TUITION, IS SJDT'S BIGGEST REVENUE SOURCE. TH NUTCRACKER IS PERFORMED AT THE 2,600 SEAT SAN JOSE CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS WITH A FULL ORCHESTRA. OUR AUDIENCES FOR THE 2021 NUTCRACKER PERFORMANCES EXCEEDED 7,000 PATRONS IN TOTAL. WE DO EIGHT PERFORMANCES FOR THE PUBLIC OVER TWO WEEKENDS. WE HAVE HUGE VOLUNTEER SUPPORT FROM THE FAMILIES AT OUR SCHOOL WHOSE CHILDREN PERFORM OR WHO JUST LOVE THE TRADITION OF VOLUNTEERING AT THE NUTCRACKER EVERY YEAR. FOR THE NUTCRACKER IN 2021 WE ALSO HELD OUR ANNUAL "SCHOOL SCHOW" ON THE FRIDAY MORNING OF OPENING NIGHT. THIS SHOW IS FOR UNDER-SERVED SCHOOL CHILDREN IN THE AREA AND IS PART OF OUR SJDT NUTCRACKER TRADITION FOR THE COMMUNITY. WE HAVE OFFERED IT FOR DECADES. WE COORDINATE WITH AREA SCHOOLS WHO ARRANGE BUSES TO BRING THE CHILDREN TO THE THEATER. SCHOOL SHOW TICKETS ARE AT A GREATLY REDUCED PRICE. WE WERE ABLE TO OFFER THIS SHOW TO A REDUCED AUDIENCE BECAUSE OF COVID RSTRITIONS. WE ALSO OFFERED A CONDENSED VERSION OF THE SHOW ENTITLED "ONCE UPON A NUTCRACKER" THE SECOND WEEKEND ON FRIDAY MORNING. IN LARGE PRODUCTIONS SUCH AS THE NUTCRACKER AND THE SLEEPING BEAUTY OUR STUDENT DANCERS PERFORM WITH OUR PROFESSIONAL COMPANY DANCERS AND TRAINEES. THESE ARE GREAT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL INVOLVED. AUDITIONS ARE OPEN TO ALL DANCERS IN THE SAN JOSE AND SF BAY AREA FOR THE NUTCRACKER MAKING IT A TRUE COMMUNITY EVENT. OUR PROFESSIONAL DANCERS AND TRAINEES WERE OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE CONTEMPORARY DANCES FOR OUR STREAMING SEASON AND THESE PERFORMANCES WERE FILMED OUTDOORS WITH UNIQUE AND INNOVATIVE LIGHTING AND LOCATIONS AND THEY WERE BEAUTIFULLY DANCED. THE DANCERS LOVED CREATING THEM AND THEY WERE WELL RECEIVED BY OUR AUDIENCES ONLINE. WE PERFORMED TWO PRODUCTIONS IN ADDITION TO OUR ANNUAL NUTCRACKER. IN NOVEMBER 2021 WE PERFORMED "MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM" AT THE HAMMER THEATER AND MADE IT AVAILABLE ON OUR STREAMING SERVICE ONLY, DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS. AND IN JUNE OF 2022 WE RETURNED TO LIVE PERFORMANCES OF THE FULL-LENGTH "THE SLEEPING BEAUTY" AT THE HAMMER THEATER.
OUR STUDIOS WERE OPEN PARTIALLY FOR CLASSES WITH DISTANCING AND MASKS, AS WELL AS ONLINE FOR 2021-22. COUNTY PROTOCOLS CONTINUALLY CHANGED DUE TO CHANGES IN THE PANDEMIC, SO WE FOLLOWED THE COUNTY GUIDLINES ACCORDINGLY. OUR GOALS FOR OUTREACH PROGRAMS TO AREA SCHOOLS IN THE 2021-22 FISCAL YEAR WERE SIDELINED BY THE PANDEMIC. WE LOOK FORWARD TO REPORTING ABOUT OUR OUTREACH PROGRAMS' SUCCESS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE 2022-23 RETURN. WE ESTABLISHED A DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM WITH FUNDS EARMARKED FOR CHILDREN AND STUDENTS OF UNDER-SERVED COMMUNITIES AND UNDER-SERVED ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS. NOW THAT OUR STUDIOS ARE MOSTLY OPEN FOR IN-PERSON CLASSES AGAIN WE LOOK FORWARD TO FULFILLING OUR AMBITIONS TO FULLY UTILIZE THE DIVERSITY FUNDS FOR STUDENTS WHO MAY NOT OTHERWISE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE BALLET AND DANCE TRAINING OFFERED AT SJDT. WE CONTINUED OUR WORKSHOP PROGRAM FOR GIRL SCOUTS TO INTRODUCE THE ART OF BALLET. THE WORKSHOPS WERE HELD AT TH SJDT STUDIOS AFTER IN-PERSON, IN- STUDIO SESSIONS WERE ALLOWED AGAIN. THEY HAVE BEEN VERY SUCESSFUL AND WELL RECEIVED.
