THE YOUTH HONOR AWARDS PROGRAM PROMOTES CREATIVITY IN CHILDREN AND YOUTH, AND SERVES KIDS AND EDUCATORS. THE SKIPPING STONES HONOR AWARDS PROGRAM RECOGNIZES BOOKS AND TEACHING RESOURCES THAT PROMOTE MULTICULTURAL AND INTERNATIONAL AWARENESS, AND/OR NATURE UNDERSTANDING. WE ALSO HELD OUR ANNUAL HAIKU AND NATURE ART CONTEST FOR ALL STUDENTS AND HOME-SCHOOLERS.THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 350 ENTRANTS BUT THESE PROGRAMS BENEFIT ALL EDUCATORS AND READERS OF SKIPPING STONES AS WELL AS OTHER EDUCATORS AND GENERAL PUBLIC. EXPENSES CONSIST OF TIME SPENT BY THE STAFF ON THE TASK OF PROCESSING, READING & JUDGING ENTRIES, PREPARING AND MAILING THE ISSUES, CERTIFICATES, BOOKS FOR THE WINNERS, ETC. REVENUES: ENTRY FEES FOR THE AWARDS PROGRAM AND AWARD SEALS. THE EXPENSES ATTRIBUTED TO THIS PROGRAM ARE APPROXIMATE AS WE HAVE ONLY ONE PAID STAFF AND THEREFORE, THE STAFF TIME IS DIVIDED BETWEEN VARIOUS TASKS IN THE OFFICE AND THUS IT IS HARD TO BE VERY EXACT.
WE SENT EDUCATIONAL READING MATERIAL FOR LOW-INCOME SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, FAMILIES AND ORGANIZATIONS SERVING LOW-INCOME YOUTH. UNDER THIS PROGRAM, WE SENT FREE AND DISCOUNTED SUBSCRIPTIONS, FREE BACK ISSUES OF OUR MAGAZINES AND DONATIONS OF BOOKS TO ABOUT 125 SCHOOLS/LIBRARIES, AND ABOUT 500 STUDENTS, NEAR AND FAR. THE EXPENSES FOR THIS PROGRAM ARE COVERED BY GENERAL DONATIONS AND SMALL GRANTS THAT WE RECEIVE FROM SUPPORTERS AND FOUNDATIONS.
