MOONSHOTS FOR UNICORNS RAISES FUNDS TO SPONSOR SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL RESEARCH AIMED AT CURING SINGLE GENE DISORDERS.

THESE GRANTS WERE MADE TO THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE AT NATIONWIDE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL TO SUPPORT RESEARCH AIMED AT CREATING AN EFFECTIVE GENE THERAPY TO CURE THE MONOGENIC DISORDER PGAP3-CDG. THE MONEY SUPPORTED CREATION OF A SECOND PATIENT CELL LINE, TESTING OF EXPERIMENTAL GENE THERAPY VECTORS ON PATIENT CELLS AND MICE, AND SMALL MOLECULE TESTING ON PATIENT CELLS.


THIS GRANT SUPPORTED DRUG REPURPOSING RESEARCH AIMED AT CURING THE MONOGENIC DISORDER PGAP3-CDG. MOONSHOTS FUNDED WORK BY PERLARA LLC AND UCSF TO CREATE PGAP3 KNOCKOUT YEAST AND SCREEN A LIBRARY OF 12,000 EXISTING COMPOUNDS ON THEM TO SEE IF THEIR GROWTH AND FUNCTION WERE IMPROVED. THIS LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF SEVERAL SAFE MEDICATIONS AND SUPPLEMENTS THAT CAN BE TAKEN BY CHILDREN WITH PGAP3-CDG THAT HELP SUPPORT THEIR NERVE CELLS AND IMPROVE THEIR DAILY FUNCTIONING. THIS WORK WAS STARTED IN 2022 AND THE DOSE RESPONSE ASSAY WAS COMPLETED IN 2023.
