THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MARINE INSTITUTE MISSION IS TO FOSTER MARINE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION, FOCUSING ON URBAN IMPACTS OF THE GREATER LOS ANGELES REGION ON THE COASTAL OCEAN. WE SEEK TO IMPROVE SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOLUTIONS THAT WILL ENABLE COASTAL WATERS AND WATERSHEDS TO THRIVE, ADAPT AND BECOME RESILIENT TO ONGOING ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS.

SCMI PROVIDES EDUCATION IN MARINE SCIENCE AND HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE TO STUDENTS AT ALL LEVELS. SCMI RECOGNIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF DELIVERING COMPELLING AND EXCITING CONCEPTS IN MATH AND SCIENCE TO STUDENTS AT AN EARLY AGE. MARINE SCIENCE IS AN EXCELLENT EXPERTISE FROM MEMBER CAMPUSES, COORDINATING THEIR EFFORTS IN TO FACILITATE RESEARCH EFFORTS. SCMI PROVIDES EQUIPMENT, VESSELS, AND PERSONNEL TO PERFORM THE TASK NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE THE HIGHEST AND MOST EFFICACIOUS LEVEL OF RESEARCH.SCMI IS DEDICATED TO WORKING WITH NOT ONLY K-12, COMMUNITY COLLEGE, AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, BUT ALSO WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO SEND A MESSAGE THAT THE OCEAN IS A BAROMETER REFLECTING HUMAN AND INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES.APPROXIMATELY 1,860 STUDENTS ARE SERVICED THRU OUR PROGRAMS.
