Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT OF NEW METHODS FOR QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT OF PEPTIDE AND PROTEIN DEAMIDATION BY MEANS OF ION CYCLOTRON RESONANCE FOURIER TRANSORM MASS SPECTROMETERY. OUR LABORATORY IS A WORLD LEADER IN DEAMIDATION RESEARCH (AT OISM FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND EARLIER 13 YEARS IN OTHER INSTITUTIONS). THE AMIDES APARAGINYL AND GLUTAMINYL ARE PRESENT IN ALMOST ALL PROTEINS AND SERVE AS MOLECULAR CLOCKS FOR BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES. DURING THE YEAR, WE CONTINUED TO IMPROVE MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES AND GAINED FURTHER UNDERSTANDING OF BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES.
STUDY OF THE DEAMIDATION OF PROTEINS INVOLVED IN ALZHEIMER'S AND PARKINSON'S DISEASES AND PROTEINS IN HUMAN EYE LENSES THAT ARE INVOLVED IN CATARACT FORMATION. PROTEIN PRECIPITATION IS INVOLVED IN THESE DISEASES. ADDITIONALY, EYE LENS PROTEINS PROVIDE A SYSTEM TO STUDY DEAMIDATION OVER VERY LONG TIME INTERVALS IN A LIVING SYSTEM.
DEVELOPMENT AND ESTABLISHMENT OF A HUMAN SAMPLE BANK TO USE IN MEDICAL DIAGNOSTIC RESEARCH.
