THE WESTERN FOUNDATION OF VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY IS BOTH A NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTION SPECIALIZING IN EGGS AND NESTS OF BIRDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, AND A RESEARCH AND EDUCATION INSTITUTION DEDICATED TO BIRD CONSERVATION.

THE MUSEUM HOUSES A COLLECTION OF APPROXIMATELY 225,000 EGGSETS, 18,000 NESTS, 56,000 BIRD SKINS, 800 MOUNTED BIRD SPECIMINS, AND 4,500 TEACHING SPECIMINS. THE EGG AND NEST COLLECTIONS ARE THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD. DATA, RECORDS, AND SPECIMIN LOANS ARE MADE AVAIALBE TO QUALIFIED RESEARCHERS AND EDUCATORS IN MULTIPLE FIELDS. A LIBRARY HOUSES MORE THAN 8,000 VOLUMES OF BOOKS AND 400 BIRD AND NATURAL HISTORY JOURNAL SERIES AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC RESEARCH.


THE FOUNDATION CONDUCTS RESEARCH STUDIES ON LOCAL AND REGIONAL BIRD POPULATIONS SUCH AS THE CACTUS WREN, THE ISLAND LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, AND LEAST BELL'S VIREO. PROJECTS COLLABORATE WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME, NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE, THE NATURE CONSERVANCY, UC SANTA BARBARA, AND CSU CHANNEL ISLANDS. RESEARCH PROJECTS STUDY AREAS SUCH AS POPULATION STATUS, IMPLICATIONS FOR SPECIES RECOVERS, LAND MANAGEMENT CONSIDERATIONS, AND RESPONSES TO RESTORATION ACTIVITIES.


PUBLIC TOURS AND TOURS TO STUDENT GROUPS PROVIDE EDUCATION ABOUT BIRD BIOLOGY, BIODIVERSITY, AND ECOLOGY. CLASSES, TRAINING, AND INTERNSHIPS ARE PROVIDED TO COLLEGE STUDENTS, RESEARCHERS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. TEACHING MATERIALS ARE LOANED FREE OF CHARGE TO LOCAL EDUCATORS.
