CHRISTMAS CAROL 2020 OFFERED 14 AT-RISK YOUTH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN A FULL-LENGTH BROADWAY MUSICAL, WORKING ALONGSIDE PROFESSIONAL ACTORS. THEN, OVER 200 AT-RISK YOUTH HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE PRODUCTION, MANY EXPERIENCING LIVE THEATRE FOR THE FIRST TIME.
IN SPRING 2021, ARTS EXPRESS THEATRE OFFERED 12 AT-RISK YOUTH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM IN A FULL-LENGTH BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF WEST SIDE STORY, WORKING ALONGSIDE PROFESSIONAL ACTORS. OVER 200 AT-RISK TEENAGERS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE PRODUCTION, MANY EXPERIENCING LIVE THEATRE FOR THE FIRST TIME VIA LIVE STREAM. TO ADDRESS THE CULTURALLY SENSITIVE THEMES, WE HELD POST-SHOW TALK-BACKS EXPLORING THE CONTEMPORARY IMPLICATIONS OF THE SHOW'S CONTENT. WE ASKED AUDIENCE MEMBERS TO BRING THOUGHTS AND QUESTIONS COVERING TOPICS SUCH AS CULTURAL DEFINITIONS AND STEREOTYPES, SEXUALITY AND MISOGYNY, AND SOCIAL OPPRESSION. THE PANEL INCLUDED CAST MEMBERS AND REPRESENTATIVES OF CULTURALLY RELEVANT ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING CHICANOS POR LA CAUSA, ARMISTADES AND THE TUCSON HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. IN ADDITION, TWO PUERTO RICAN PROFESSIONAL ACTORS CONSULTED WITH THE CAST REGARDING CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AS WELL AS PROVIDING A CULTURAL LENS TO THE STORYLINE.
DURING THE SUMMER OF 2021, OUR MONTE AWARDS (NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE AWARDS) AND LET FREEDOM SING 4TH OF JULY EVENTS WERE LIVE AND LIVE STREAMED. COMBINED, THOSE SHOWS HAD OVER 4000 VIEWERS! OUR SUMMER CLASSES AND CAMPS SERVED OVER 100 KIDS WITH LIVE SOCIALLY-DISTANCED AND MASKED PROGRAMMING.
