TO GROW AND CULTIVATE A LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNITY FOR JAZZ THROUGH PERFORMANCE, EDUCATION AND OUTREACH WHILE CELEBRATING AND PRESERVING CHARLESTON'S RICH HISTORY IN JAZZ.

CHARLESTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA - THE CJO, LED BY ROBERT LEWIS, IS COMPRISED OF AN ACCOMPLISHED GROUP OF 18 JAZZ MUSICIANS AND FEATURES GUEST PERFORMERS FOR AN ENTERTAINING AND EDUCATIONAL SEASON EVERY YEAR. THE CJO HAS BECOME KNOWN FOR UNIQUE, ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED CONCERTS THAT CONTRIBUTE MIGHTILY TO THE EVER-EVOLVING LOWCOUNTRY ARTS SCENE AND SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE OF THE RICH HISTORY AND LEGACY OF JAZZ IN CHARLESTON. IN 2022,THE CHARLESTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA (CJO) PERFORMED ITS SIX-CONCERT SEASON AT THE CHARLESTON MUSIC HALL.


THE ANNUAL CHARLESTON JAZZ FESTIVAL WAS HELD FROM APRIL 21 TO 24, 2022, AND FEATURED EIGHT PERFORMANCES BY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN GROUPS, INCLUDING THE EMMET COHEN TRIO, KANDACE SPRINGS; JORGE LUIS PACHECO QUARTET; AND ETIENNE CHARLES & CREOLE SOUL. FAMILY JAZZ DAY CLOSED OUT THE FESTIVAL WITH PERFORMANCES BY JAZZ BANDS FROM AREA SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS FROM THE CHARLESTON JAZZ ACADEMY.


THE CHARLESTON JAZZ ACADEMY BRINGS TOGETHER STUDENTS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS AND AGES IN A COLLABORATIVE, FUN, AND CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT TO EXPAND THEIR REPERTOIRE AND NURTURE THE SKILLS OF MUSIC AND IMPROVISATION WHILE EMPHASIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF TEAMWORK, CREATIVITY, AND SELF-EXPRESSION. THE PURPOSE OF THE CHARLESTON JAZZ ACADEMY IS TO CULTIVATE THE NEXT GENERATION OF JAZZ ARTISTS AND ENTHUSIASTS THROUGH A VARIETY OF EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS.
