AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMMING (ASP) PROVIDING K-8 COMPUTER SCIENCE CLASSES TO STUDENTS IN 7 PUBLIC SCHOOLS, 5 CHARTER SCHOOLS, 10 COMMUNITY CENTERS, AND 1 BUS, REACHING OVER 2,000 STUDENTS. DEPENDING UPON THE PROGRAM AND STUDENT GRADE LEVEL, STUDENTS GOT TO: EXPLORE THE SCRATCH CODING LANGUAGE (USED IN CREATING GAMES AND ANIMATIONS); LEARNED HOW TO SET UP A WEBSITE USING THE CODING LANGUAGES HTML AND CSS; LEARNED FOUNDATIONAL CODING CONCEPTS THROUGH BOTH UN-PLUGGED AND PLUGGED (USING COMPUTERS)ACTIVITIES; APP DEVELOPMENT WHERE STUDENTS EXPLORED THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPING AN APP WITH A PARTNER; AN EXPLORATION OF ROBOTICS USING THE FINCH ROBOTS OR LEGO WEDO.


IN-SCHOOL SERVICES (INS) PROVIDING COMPUTER SCIENCE CLASSES TO K-8 STUDENTS IN THE STO-ROX SCHOOL DISTRICT AND THE PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT (KING ELEMENTARY) DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. WORKING WITH MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHERS TO INTEGRATE COMPUTER SCIENCE INTO THEIR STUDENTS' REGULAR SCHOOL DAY. IN THE STO-ROX SCHOOL DISTRICT WE PROVIDED SEVENTEEN CLASSES PER WEEK TO STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-6. STUDENTS IN 3RD GRADE EXPLORED COMPUTER PROGRAMMING/CODING USING THE SCRATCH CODING LANGUAGE; 4TH GRADE WORKED ON ROBOTICS USING FINCH ROBOTS; 5TH GRADE FOCUSED ON LEARNING HOW TO SET UP A WEBPAGE USING HTML AND CSS CODING LANGUAGES; 6TH GRADE LEARNED HOW TO DEVELOP AN APP WORKING ON TEAMS TO RESEARCH THE NEED, THE AUDIENCE, AND THE BASICS OF SETTING UP AN APP. DURING THE APP DEVELOPMENT PROCESS, STUDENTS LEARNED HOW TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY AND HOW TO DO ONLINE RESEARCH.


SUMMER PROGRAMMING PROVIDING VARIOUS SUMMER PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES TO THE PITTSBURGH AREA YOUTH. CS EXPLORERS SUMMER CAMP PROVIDED AN EXPLORATION OF CS FOR STUDENTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. STUDENTS EXPLORED SIX DIFFERENT AREAS OF CS SUCH AS AI, CYBERSECURITY, ANIMATION AND GAMING, ADVANCED MANUFACTURING, ROBOTICS, AND BIG DATA. STUDENTS MET WITH AREA PROFESSIONALS WHO WORK IN THE FIELD AND WERE ABLE TO ASK QUESTIONS. THE SUMMER BOOST PROGRAM INTRODUCED STUDENTS IN GRADES 3 AND 4 TO THE WORLD OF ROBOTICS. STUDENTS AND HUMAN SERVICES CENTER CORP IN MON VALLEY EXPLORED CODING WORKING WITH LEGO WEDO ROBOTICS.
