JAMES SAMARITAN OPERATES A YOUTH AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT CENTER (THE CENTER)IN COVINGTON, LOUISIANA DEDICATED TO THE SUPPORT AND WELFARE OF CHILDREN, FAMILIES, CAREGIVERS AND THE COMMUNITY WITHIN THE FOSTER WELFARE SYSTEM. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES (DCFS), OTHER NON-PROFITS AND THE COMMUNITY, THE CENTER IS USED FOR VISITATIONS, DCFS CASEWORKER TRAINING AND MEETINGS, FOSTER PARENT RESPITES, TUTORING, LIFE SKILLS TRAINING AND OTHER PURPOSES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE MOST VULNERABLE IN OUR COMMUNITY.
OPEN TABLE MOVEMENT (THE OPEN TABLE) IS A COMPREHENSIVE MODEL AND PROGRAM TO PROVIDE A RELATIONAL SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR TRANSITIONING FOSTER YOUTHS WHO HAVE OR WILL BE AGING OUT OF THE FOSTER SYSTEM. THESE YOUTHS ARE STATISTICALLY HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO UNEMPLOYMENT, HOMELESSNESS, OUT OF WEDLOCK PREGNANCIES, INCARCERATION AND SEX TRAFFICKING. BIOLOGICAL PARENTS, WHO HAVE LOST OR AT RISK OF LOSING CHILDREN TO THE FOSTER SYSTEM, ARE ALSO ELIGIBLE TO BENEFIT FROM THE RELATIONAL MENTORING OF OPEN TABLE. OPEN TABLE IS A DOCUMENTED SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM THAT IS USED BOTH NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. IT IS THE ONLY MENTORING PROGRAM SANCTIONED BY THE LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES. THE CONTRACT WITH OPEN TABLE EXPIRED ON DECEMBER 31, 2021 AND THE PROGRAM WILL END ON THAT DATE.
