"BOOKS FOR KIDS" DISTRIBUTES BOOK PACKETS TO PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN ENCOURAGING READING AT AN EARLY AGE & SUPPLYING SAMPLES OF APPROPRIATE BOOKS. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES APPROXIMATELY 7,000 - 8,000 GENTLY USED BOOKS AND SERVES APPROXIMATELY 600 CHILDREN ANNUALLY.
HEADSTART AND TEENAGE PARENTING PROGRAMS: "HEADSTART PROGRAM" PREPARES STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS IN KINDERGARTEN. A SCHOOL DISTRICT PROGRAM THAT READ FOR LIFE SUPPLEMENTS BY PROVIDING EACH CHILD WITH 5 NEW BOOKS, AND BY TRAINING PARENTS HOW TO READ ALOUD TO THEIR CHILD. SERVES APPROXIMATELY 1,600 CHILDREN AT 60 SCHOOL SITES ANNUALLY. "TEENAGE PARENTING PROGRAM" WORKS WITH TEENS IN TULARE COUNTY TO ENCOURAGE PARENTS TO READ TO THEIR BABIES AND TODDLERS. VOLUNTEERS VISIT CLASSROOMS TO SHARE AND DEMONSTRATE LITERACY TECHNIQUES TO ENHANCE THE KNOWLEDGE AND BENEFITS OF READING TO THEIR CHILDREN. CURRENTLY, READ FOR LIFE PROVIDES NEW BOOKS TO TEEN AGE PARENTING PROGRAMS AND HEAD START SITES COUNTY WIDE. THREE DISTRIBUTIONS OF AGE APPROPRIATE QUALITY LITERATURE ARE DONATED TO EACH SITE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR. THESE BOOKS HELP BEGIN A CHILD'S PERSONAL LIBRARY AT HOME, PROVIDING A GREATER POTENTIAL FOR SUCCESS IN SCHOOL.
