THE KATIE CAPLES FOUNDATION WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1998, IN MEMORY OF KATIE CAPLES WHO BECAME AN ORGAN AND TISSUE DONOR AFTER NOT SURVIVING THE TRAUMA OF AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT. THE FOUNDATION'S MISSION INCLUDES (1) STIMULATE CHANGE IN ORGAN/TISSUE DONATION AWARENESS AND (2) CREATE ENVIRONMENTS AND ESTABLISH PROGRAMS THAT WILL ENRICH MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGH AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE IN CHARACTER, ACADEMICS, EMPATHY, RESPECT, ATHLETICS, TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AND INDIVIDUAL COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION.

THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY PROGRAM IS ORGAN DONATION EDUCATION WHERE STUDENTS HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING ON MAKING A DECISION ABOUT ORGAN DONATION. WE BELIEVE THIS TO BE THE MOST AGGRESSIVE EDUCATIONAL ENDEAVOR OF ITS KIND IN THE NATION. THE KATIE RIDE FOR LIFE IS THE MAJOR SOURCE OF FUNDRAISING FOR THIS PROGRAM. PARTNERSHIPS WITH REGIONAL AND NATIONAL HEALTHCARE FACILITIES, UNIVERSITIES, AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS HAVE ALLOWED THE FOUNDATION TO EXPAND ITS AWARENESS RAISING CAMPAIGNS AND ORGAN DONOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING RESULTING IN A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF REGISTERED ORGAN DONORS IN THE AREAS THE FOUNDATION SERVES.
