OUR MISSION IS TO STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITIES, MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE LIVES WE TOUCH, AND PROVIDE A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN PEOPLE THROUGH EDUCATION, ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES, AND THE PRESERVATION OF THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
HUI HULIAU IS A NATIVE HAWAIIAN ORGANIZATION (NHO) FOUNDED IN 2010. NHO'S ARE NONPROFIT COMMUNITY SERVICE ENTITIES WHICH SUPPORT THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN COMMUNITY AS DEFINED BY THE SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (SBA). DEEPLY ROOTED IN FEDERAL LAW, AN NHO'S PURPOSE IS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN COMMUNITY THROUGH ITS MAJORITY OWNERSHIP AND OPERATION OF ONE OR MORE SMALL BUSINESS 8(A) FOR-PROFIT ENTITIES. THE NHO'S ABILITY TO ACHIEVE ITS CONGRESSIONAL MANDATE IS, THEREFORE, DIRECTLY IMPACTED BY THE SUCCESS OF ITS SMALL BUSINESS 8(A) ENTITIES.THROUGH INVESTMENTS IN THE FOR-PROFIT ENTITIES, HUI HULIAU SUPPORTS KEIKI (YOUTH) PROGRAMS, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, FINANCIAL AWARDS/SCHOLARHSIPS, KUPUNA (ELDER) SUPPORT, KOA KAHIKO (VETERANS) SUPPORT, AND OTHER PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS THAT PRESERVE THE RICH HAWAIIAN CULTURE. DURING 2022, THIS INCLUDED DONATING 3D PRINTERS TO LOCAL SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY CENTERS, AND LAINAI HEALTH CLINIC; CATERING FOOD TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY TO FEED THOSE FACING FOOD INSECURITY; AND SPONSORING THE WAIANAE TEAM DURING THE HAWAI'I ANNUAL ALOHA PARADE.
HUI HULIAU LEASED 2.5 ACRES IN WAIANAE IN FEBRUARY 2022 AND BEGAN BUILDING A LEARNING CENTER WITH CLASSROOMS AND AN IT LAB, AN AQUAPONICS FARMING SYSTEM, VARIED FRUIT TREES, AND A NATIVE PLANT NURSERY TO SERVE MULTIPLE NEEDS IN THE WAIANAE COMMUNITY. THIS FACILITY WILL HOST FREE TECHNOLOGY COURSES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN SUPPORT OF HAWAII'S WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, OFFER INTERACTIVE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES FOR GRADE SCHOOL CHILDREN, AND GROW FOOD FOR THOSE IN NEED. IN 2022 HUI HULIAU INVESTED $273K ESTABLISHING THIS LEARNING CENTER.
IT LAB AND AQUAPONICS FARMING PROGRAMS: LEAD BY ADRIAN SILVA, A GROUP OF OUR HUI HULIAU LEADERS ARE CURRENTLY PHYSICALLY WORKING ON A TWO-ACRE LAND IN WAIANAE. OUR CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, ADRIAN SILVA, PHYSICALLY WORKS ON THE GROUNDS. THEY LEVEL THE LAND, INSTALL WATER LINES, RETROFIT 40 FEET CONTAINERS INTO CLASSROOMS, RENOVATE A MOBILE CONTAINER INTO A MODERN SANITARY FACILITY FOR OUR FUTURE PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS. SO FAR, A ROOF IS ALREADY BUILT OVER THE CONTAINER MADE CLASSROOMS. ADRIAN IS ALSO PLANTING BANANA, PAPAYA, AND TI-LEAVE TREES ON THE GROUND. THREE FISH TANKS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED.
HUI HULIAU MADE MULTIPLE CASH DONATIONS TO NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT SERVE NATIVE HAWAIIANS ALONG THE WAIANAE COAST WHICH DIRECTLY SUPPORT KEIKI (YOUTH) PROGRAMS, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, FINANCIAL AWARDS/SCHOLARSHIPS, KUPUNA (ELDER) SUPPORT, KOA KAHIKO (VETERANS) SUPPORT, AND OTHER PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS THAT PRESERVE THE RICH HAWAIIAN CULTURE. IN 2022 HUI HULIAU MADE $149K IN CONTRIBUTIONS TO OTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
HUI HULIAU ESTABLISHED A GRANT PROGRAM FOR HUI HULIAU HOU TO PROVIDE ONGOING SUPPORT OF HUI HULIAU HOU'S EFFORTS IN ESTABLISHING VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED YOUTH IN THE WAIANAE COMMUNITY. IN 2022 HUI HULIAU CONTRIBUTED $106K IN GRANTS TO HUI HULIAU HOU.
