IN FULFILLING THE ORGANIZATION'S EXEMPT PURPOSES, AIA MARYLAND MONITORS THE STATE LEGISLATURE BY MONITORING AND PURSUING LEGISLATION TO IMPROVE THE PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURE ON BEHALF OF ITS 1,500+ ARCHITECT MEMBERS WITHIN THE STATE OF MARYLAND. THE ORGANIZATION HOLDS A PROFESSIONAL AND STUDENT ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN COMPETITION WHICH PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR MEMBERS AND STUDENTS TO GAIN RECOGNITION FOR THEIR WORK. THE ORGANIZATION AWARDS CASH PRIZES TO ARCHITECTURAL STUDENTS IN THE STUDENT AWARD COMPETITION. AIA MARYLAND ADDITIONALLY PROMOTES PROFESSIONAL AND STUDENT WORK BY SHOWCASING ARCHITECTURAL EXHIBITS IN THE ORGANIZATION'S BUILDING FRONT GALLERY SPACE. AIA MARYLAND ALSO STARTED A DISASTER ASSISTANCE COMMITTEE TO PERFORM RAPID BUILDING ASSESSMENTS IN POST-DISASTER SITUATIONS.
