INDUSTRY STRENGTHENING: IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GOOGLE NEWS INITIATIVE, WE WROTE THE GNI STARTUPS PLAYBOOK AS A LAUNCHING POINT FOR ASPIRING NEWS FOUNDERS WHO WANT TO TEST A BUSINESS IDEA. THE PLAYBOOK IS AVAILABLE IN BOTH ENGLISH AND SPANISH, AND HAD ALMOST 7,000 VIEWS IN THE FIRST SIX MONTHS. LION INCREASED THE REACH OF OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER TO 3,840 AND CREATED A NEWS ENTREPRENEUR COMMUNITY ON SLACK THAT EXCEEDED 700 MEMBERS. WE LAUNCHED NEWS GUEST, A PODCAST TO SPOTLIGHT INDEPENDENT PUBLISHERS WHO ARE BUILDING SUSTAINABLE NEWS BUSINESSES; THE FIRST SEASON RECEIVED OVER 2,000 PLAYS. FINALLY, THROUGH OUR COLLABORATION WITH PROJECT OASIS, WE PUBLISHED LONG-AWAITED RESEARCH ON THE STATE OF INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWS IN NORTH AMERICA AND LAUNCHED A SEARCHABLE DATABASE OF MORE THAN 700 INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWS BUSINESSES IN THE U.S. AND CANADA.
MEMBERSHIP: WE GREW OUR MEMBERSHIP COMMUNITY BY 25% TO A TOTAL OF 424. WE INTRODUCED NEW MEMBER BENEFITS INCLUDING ACCESS TO MEDIA LIABILITY INSURANCE AND PRO BONO LEGAL SUPPORT, WHILE PILOTING NEW ONES, INCLUDING FREE REVENUE COACHING SESSIONS. WE HELD OUR THIRD ANNUAL LION LOCAL JOURNALISM AWARDS HONORING THE BEST INDEPENDENT ONLINE MEDIA ACROSS THE U.S. AND CANADA, ADDING NEW CATEGORIES TO HIGHLIGHT THE WORK OUR MEMBERS HAVE DONE TO PUT THEIR BUSINESSES ON THE PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY. WE HAD A 43% INCREASE IN ENTRIES FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR, AND 25 WINNERS ACROSS 15 CATEGORIES.
NEWS BUSINESS PROGRAMMING: LION GRADUATED A SECOND COHORT OF ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS FROM THE GOOGLE NEWS INITIATIVE STARTUPS BOOT CAMP, WHO LAUNCHED 23 NEWS BUSINESSES ACROSS THE U.S. WE PARTNERED WITH NEWS CATALYST TO DESIGN AND LAUNCH THE TINY NEWS COLLECTIVE AND PROVIDED TOOLS, TRAINING, AND ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT TO THE FIRST COHORT OF 6 LOCAL NEWS PUBLISHERS. LION LAUNCHED THE GOOGLE NEWS INITIATIVE STARTUPS LAB, WHICH SUPPORTED 10 NEWS BUSINESSES WITH A TOTAL OF $350,000 TO TEST IDEAS TO STRENGTHEN THEIR OPERATIONS, FINANCES AND IMPACT. WE ALSO LAUNCHED THE META-LION REVENUE GROWTH FELLOWSHIP, A TWO-YEAR PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES 12 LION MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS WITH A TOTAL OF $1M IN FUNDING TO BRING ON A NEW HIRE TO FOCUS ON REVENUE GENERATION. WE ALSO PILOTED AND ITERATED ON THE SUSTAINABILITY AUDIT, A FRAMEWORK FOR IDENTIFYING STRENGTHS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH IN OPERATIONAL RESILIENCE, FINANCIAL HEALTH, AND JOURNALISTIC IMPACT; WE PROVIDED AUDITS FOR 50 LION MEMBERS.
