THE LITERARY SOCIETY OF THE DESERT IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION PROMOTING LITERACY AND THE LOVE OF READING THROUGH PRESENTATIONS BY (AND DISCUSSIONS WITH) LEADING AUTHORS, AS WELL AS PROMOTING LITERACY, WRITING SKILLS, AND THE LOVE OF READING IN THE COMMUNITY.

5 LUNCHEONS TOOK PLACE THIS YEAR WHERE AUTHORS MET WITH MEMBERS AND GUESTS TO DISCUSS THEIR BOOKS. SUPPORT OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN THE COACHELLA VALLEY - GRANTS ARE GIVEN TO 12 LIBRARIES FOR A TOTAL OF 30,000. A SET OF AUTHOR'S BOOKS IS ALSO GIVEN TO EACH LIBRARY - VALUE 2,400. 15 LIBRARIANS ATTEND EACH LUNCHEON - VALUE OF 1,125 TO ENCOURAGE THE LOVE OF READING IN YOUNG PEOPLE, 96 STUDENTS AND 10 FACULTY MEMBERS FROM 10 LOCAL SCHOOLS ARE INVITED TO MEET PRIVATELY WITH THE FEATURED AUTHOR FOR AN HOUR PRIOR TO ATTENDING THE LUNCHEON AT WHICH THE AUTHOR ADDRESSES THE MEMBERSHIP. THE AUTHOR'S BOOK IS GIVEN TO EACH CLASSROOM AND FACULTY MEMBER AT LEAST ONE MONTH BEFORE THE EVENT TO ALLOW TIME TO PREPARE FOR THEIR PRIVATE MEETING. - 6,000
