CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION: HTRS OFFERED THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS IN 2023 TO SUPPORT THE PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT OF OUR MEMBERS: TWO (2) 1.5-DAY TRAINEE WORKSHOPS FOR MEDICAL RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS LAUNCHING CAREERS IN HEMOSTASIS AND THROMBOSIS; TWO (2) IN-PERSON CONECCTOR MEETINGS FOR THE HTRS JUNIOR FACULTY NETWORK HELD DURING NATIONAL MEETINGS; TWO (2) "BEST OF" EVENTS FOR ABSTRACT DISCUSSION AND NETWORKING EVENT HELD DURING NATIONAL MEETINGS; FOUR (4) FELLOWS NETWORK-CASE EXCHANGE SERIES VIRTUAL MEETINGS; ONE (1) SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM, WHICH IS HTRS'S LARGEST EDUCATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE, HELD OVER A THREE-DAY PERIOD; AND ONE (1) SEARCH WORKSHOP FOR UNDERGRADUATE, MEDICAL, AND DOCTORAL STUDENTS EXPLORING CAREERS IN HEMOSTASIS AND THROMBOSIS.
GRANTS AND ASSISTANCE: THE PRIMARY STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE OF HTRS IS TO COMBAT THE CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF SKILLED PHYSICIAN-SCIENTISTS AND DISCOVERY-BASED RESEARCHERS DEDICATED TO CAREERS IN HEMOSTASIS AND THROMBOSIS IN NORTH AMERICA. HTRS PROVIDES MEMBERS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO APPLY FOR INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED RESEARCH GRANTS USING FUNDS RAISED FOR THIS PURPOSE FROM PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES VIA INDEPENDENT MEDICAL EDUCATION (IME) GRANTS OR CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP. HTRS AWARDS ARE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT MEMBERS AT CRITICAL STAGES OF THEIR CAREERS. THE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD IS AN 8-WEEK INTRODUCTION TO BASIC OR TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH IN NONMALIGNANT HEMATOLOGY FOR UNDERGRADUATE, MEDICAL, OR DOCTORAL STUDENTS WORKING WITH AN EXPERIENCED MENTOR. THE CLINICAL SCHOLAR AWARD PROVIDES FUNDING FOR A FOURTH AND FINAL YEAR OF INTENSIVE CLINICAL TRAINING IN HEMOPHILIA AND RARE BLEEDING DISORDERS. THE MENTORED RESEARCH AWARD IS DESIGNED TO PREPARE RECIPIENTS TO APPLY FOR A K-AWARD OR EQUIVALENT FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH) TO FORMALLY LAUNCH THEIR RESEARCH CAREERS IN ACADEMIC MEDICINE. THE MID-CAREER RESEARCH AWARD IS FOR SEASONED INVESTIGATORS WHO HAVE COMPLETED FELLOWSHIP AND/OR POSTDOCTORAL WORK BUT NEED SUPPORT TO TRANSITION FROM MENTORED RESEARCH TO FULLY INDEPENDENT, INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED RESEARCH. THE HTRS SEED GRANT INITIATIVE PROVIDES SMALL GRANTS FOR PHDS WHO NEED ADDITIONAL FUNDS TO GET THEIR PROJECTS READY TO COMPETE NATIONALLY FOR LARGER GRANT FUNDS.
