IN SEPTEMBER 2020, WE STARTED OUR FISCAL YEAR STILL COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN FOR INDOOR LIVE THEATRE PER LA COUNTY COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS. THEREFORE, SEPTEMBER 2020 TO SEPTEMBER 2021 WAS TRULY A FISCAL YEAR OF FIRSTS FOR THE GARRY MARSHALL THEATRE. OUR 3RD ANNUAL NEW WORKS FESTIVAL PIVOTED FROM THE IN-PERSON FESTIVAL TO A YOUTUBE LIVE STREAM WEEKEND VIRTUAL FESTIVAL. THE GMT IS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST LA COUNTY THEATRE TO PRESENT FIVE PLAYWRIGHTS AND THEIR PLAYS IN AN ONLINE SHOWCASE OF NEW WORK. EACH PLAY HAD A DIVERSE GROUP OF PROFESSIONAL ACTORS AND DIRECTORS, WHO REHEARSED VIA ZOOM THAT CULMINATED IN PALPABLE PRESENTATIONS OF THESE RELEVANT NEW WORKS THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER 26 AND 27, 2020. IT WAS LIVE-STREAMED FOR AUDIENCES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THE NEW WORKS FESTIVAL HAD OVER 250 HOUSEHOLDS PARTICIPATE VIRTUALLY. THE FESTIVAL WAS WELL RECEIVED BY OUR AUDIENCE AND WAS TRULY IMPACTING FOR THE PLAYWRIGHTS. THE PRESENTATIONS WERE RECORDED AND MADE AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING BY ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES FROM SEPTEMBER 28 TO OCTOBER 4, 2020. THE FESTIVAL WAS FREE OF CHARGE TO VIEWERS. MANY IN OUR GROWING ONLINE AUDIENCE FELT THE DIVERSE VOICES AND INCLUSIVE NATURE OF THE FESTIVAL. THE GARRY MARSHALL THEATRE RECOGNIZED THAT THE ONLINE PIVOT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS AND A GREAT FIRST FOR OUR NONPROFIT. OUR SECOND "FIRST" OF THIS FISCAL YEAR WAS TAKING OUR RESIDENT HOLIDAY CONCERT EVENT HOLIDAZE HARMONY TO A NEW STREAMING PLATFORM DESIGNED TO REACH A THEATRE AUDIENCE. THIS MARKED THE FIRST TIME WE EVER FILMED THIS STUNNING, LIVE CONCERT USING A MULTI-CAMERA FORMAT. HOLIDAZE HARMONY: HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS WAS FILMED ON THE GARRY MARSHALL THEATRE STAGE IN OCTOBER OF 2020 WITH A DIVERSE CAST AND CREW WORKING FOUR CAMERAS OVER THREE DAYS TO FILM THE 65-MINUTE CONCERT SPECIAL. THE ONLINE OPENING NIGHT STREAM AIRED ON DECEMBER 16, 2020. VIEWERSHIP WAS WIDE AND FROM AROUND THE WORLD, AND COULD LIVE CHAT WITH BROADWAY VETERANS AND STARS OF THE SHOW: KAMILAH MARSHALL AND TERRON BROOKS. THE CONCERT WAS AVAILABLE ON-DEMAND THROUGH EARLY JANUARY. OVER 500 HOUSEHOLDS OF FAMILIES PURCHASED THEIR ONLINE TICKETS TO THIS HOLIDAY EVENT THAT IS PART CONCERT, PART VARIETY SHOW. TICKETS RANGED FROM $25-$35 PER HOUSEHOLD. AS THE PANDEMIC CONTINUED INTO 2021 WITH INDOOR THEATRE STILL BEING SHUT DOWN, THE GMT CREATED ITS THIRD "FIRST" - AN OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE CALLED FAMILY GARDEN DAYS. THE GMT PIVOTED TO AN OUTDOOR GARDEN EXPERIENCE FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGES 5-10 YEARS OLD. DURING THE LOCKDOWN, GMT PRODUCER, JOSEPH LEO BWARIE, REIMAGINED THE OUTDOOR SPACE AND BUILT A FANTASTIC GARDEN THAT ENGAGED NEIGHBORS TO CONNECT WITH THE THEATRE SPACE, AND WELCOMED THEM TO BE INCLUDED IN THE GARDEN AND IT'S PROGRAMMING. WITH MASKS AND ALL HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS IN PLACE, THE GMT CREATED A 90-MINUTE, FULLY-PRODUCED STORYTELLING GARDEN EVENT. THE HOUR AND HALF INCLUDED AN OUTDOOR SCAVENGER HUNT, AND A STORY THEATRE PERFORMANCE BY THREE PROMINENT LA ACTORS: JULLY LEE, RAVI KAPOOR AND JULIE PEARL. FOLLOWING THE STORY, THE FAMILIES WERE GIVEN ART SUPPLIES TO CREATE THEIR OWN GARDEN ART ON PAPER. FINALLY THE CHILDREN PARTICIPATED IN HANDS-ON PLANTING OF THEIR OWN FLOWERS IN POTS TO TAKE HOME AND CARE FOR AND WATCH GROW. THIS EVENT TRULY PULLED THE GMT OUT OF THE COVID SHUT DOWN AND GAVE SO MUCH HOPE TO OUR STAFF AND OUR COMMUNITY. FAMILIES FROM ALL OVER LOS ANGELES COUNTY CAME OUT FOR THIS EVENT. FOR MANY IT WAS THEIR FIRST OUTING SINCE THE LOCKDOWN BEGAN - MANY EVEN ENJOYING TIME WITH GRANDPARENTS AND EXTENDED FAMILY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY MONTHS. THIS OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE TOOK PLACE MAY 15 &16, MAY 22 & 23 - AND DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND - AN EXTENDED WEEKEND ON JUNE 5 & 6, 2021. THIS WAS A FREE COMMUNITY EVENT. AS WE NAVIGATED OUR PROGRAMMING THROUGH COVID TIMES IN THE FISCAL YEAR 2020 TO 2021, WITH FOUND SUCCESS, WE NEVER LOST SIGHT OF SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY. THE GMT HOSTED TWO AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVES AT THE THEATRE, AND CONTINUED TO OFFER FREE YOGA CLASSES IN THE GARDEN THROUGH THE SPRING OF 2021. KEEPING OUR GARDEN OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE DURING THE LA COUNTY EXTENDED COVID-19 MANDATES, THE GMT BELIEVES WE HAVE TRULY EXPANDED OUR REACH. WE HAVE GAINED A BROADER BASE OF SUPPORT FROM MANY DIFFERENT PARTS OF LOS ANGELES AND BURBANK THROUGH THESE "FIRSTS" THAT ALLOWED US TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY.
