Describe the Organization's Mission:

Part 3 - Line 1

THE LEGAL AID ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA (LAAC), THE STATEWIDE MEMBERSHIP OF LEGAL SERVICES NONPROFITS, SERVES ITS MEMBERS THROUGH ADVOCACY AND OTHER SUPPORT IN EFFORTS TO PROVIDE LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO LOW-INCOME CALIFORNIANS AND ENSURE ACCESS TO JUSTICE.

Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

LAAC COORDINATION AND TRAINING DURING FY21-22, LAAC PROVIDED A SERIES OF EVENTS FOR THE CALIFORNIA LEGAL SERVICES COMMUNITY, INCLUDING: ONE DIRECTORS OF LITIGATION AND ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT CENTER SECTION MEETING, SEVERAL TRIAL ADVOCACY SKILLS TRAININGS, AND MULTIPLE ONLINE WEBINAR TRAININGS FOR ATTORNEYS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. LAAC ALSO PROVIDED FIVE SUMMER FELLOWSHIPS FOR LAW STUDENTS COMMITTED TO PUBLIC INTEREST THROUGH LAACS DAN BRADLEY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. LAAC UNDERTOOK SEVERAL ADVOCACY EFFORTS TO SUCCESSFULLY INCREASE STATE FUNDING FOR LEGAL AID, BOTH BY INCREASING FUNDING FOR GENERAL SERVICES (THROUGH THE STATES EQUAL ACCESS FUND) AND BY CREATING NEW FUNDING TO EXPAND PROGRAMS IN HOUSING AND HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION WORK. LAACS EFFORTS RESULTED IN MORE THAN $150 MILLION IN NEW FUNDING PLEDGED FOR LEGAL AID IN THE STATES FY21-22 BUDGET AND BEYOND.

LAWHELP DURING FY21-22, LAAC ALSO SUPPORTED A STATEWIDE RESOURCE AND REFERRAL WEBSITE FOR INDIVIDUALS SEEKING LEGAL ADVICE AND INFORMATION AT WWW.LAWHELPCA.ORG. LAAC STAFF TRAINED FRONT-LINE HELPERS ACROSS THE STATE ON HOW TO HELP PEOPLE IN CRISIS ACCESS LEGAL RESOURCES. THE PROGRAM GREW DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN RESPONSE TO PEOPLE FACING EMPLOYMENT AND HOUSING INSECURITY. IN THIS FISCAL YEAR, THE WORK FOCUSED NOT ONLY ON IMPROVING RESOURCES, BUT ALSO ON IMPROVING SITE FUNCTIONALITY FOR USERS ACCESSING THE SITE BY MOBILE DEVICE. STAFF ALSO RECRUITED VOLUNTEER LAW STUDENTS TO HELP CITE USERS FIND THE INFORMATION THEY NEEDED, AS PEOPLE IN LEGAL CRISIS OFTEN WANT A REAL PERSON (NOT A BOT) TO HELP THEM OUT, EVEN WHEN ACCESSING RESOURCES ONLINE.

DURING FY21-22, THE LEGAL AID ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA CONTINUED THE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CALIFORNIA ACCESS TO JUSTICE COMMISSION (CALATJ). CALATJ IS A SEPARATE, INDEPENDENT NONPROFIT MADE UP OF LAWYERS, JUDGES, ACADEMICS, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS DEDICATED TO MAKING THE CIVIL JUSTICE SYSTEM ACCESSIBLE TO ALL. CALATJ IS A SMALL ORGANIZATION WITHOUT ITS OWN STAFF, SO THEY CONTRACT WITH LAAC THROUGH AN MOU FOR STAFFING NEEDS. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON CALATJ AND OUR PARTNERSHIP, PLEASE VISIT WWW.CALATJ.ORG.
