THE LARGEST PROGRAM AREA FOR KRC IS ENVIRONMENTAL AND COMMUNITY DEFENSE, WHICH PROVIDES FREE LEGAL AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND REPRESENTATION TO THOSE "LIVING DOWNWIND, DOWNSTREAM, AND DOWNHILL" OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION. KRC PROVIDES REPRESENTATION TO INDIVIDUALS WHO CANNOT AFFORD OR FIND REPRESENTATION, NON-PROFIT AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND CIVIC GROUPS ON A RANGE OF ISSUES THAT PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND SAFEGUARD KENTUCKY'S NATURAL RESOURCES. IN 2022, KRC WORKED ON 32 LEGAL CASES, INCLUDING LITIGATION AFFECTING SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT ISSUES, WATER POLLUTION, AND CASES BEFORE THE KENTUCKY PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION.
THROUGH ITS CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY, KRC CONDUCTS RESEARCH, PROVIDES POLICY ANALYSIS, AND EDUCATES THE PUBLIC AND POLICYMAKERS ON IMPORTANT ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY ISSUES AFFECTING KENTUCKY. KRC ALSO ENGAGED IN, WITHIN THE LIMITS ESTABLISHED BY THE IRS, LIMITED LOBBYING REGARDING ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENERGY POLICY MATTERS, INCLUDING IMPROVING PIPELINE HAZARD REDUCTION, UTILITY SERVICE AFFORDABILITY, FUNDING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATORY AGENCIES, AND PARTICIPATING IN THE STATE'S OIL AND GAS WORKING GROUP ON A BILL THAT AMENDS THE DEFINITION OF ORPHAN WELLS" SO THAT KENTUCKY CAN OBTAIN UP TO $104 MILLION IN FEDERAL AID TO PLUG AND RECLAIM KENTUCKY'S ABANDONED OIL AND GAS WELLS.
THROUGH OUR KENTUCKY ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE, KRC SEEKS TO INSPIRE AND INFORM THE MANY KENTUCKIANS READY TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGE.
